I was watching yesterday, when something happened which really upset me. Now I know the presenter is new, but what was said, and implied, was IMHO not right.
Someone requested an item, which was put up for auction, and someone else bought it. Fair enough?? All's fair in love and auctions?? Well, quite a big deal was made about this ... requester not having time to come in and bid, ...we'll look and see if we have anything similar ... and several other times during this show, the presenter asked if that requester was still watching because they had found other items which they could show them, and why this was being done. Now, that's very nice that they were trying to help this person find what they were looking for - but I felt that it was particularly harsh on the person who had bought the original item, having their nose rubbed in it continually (ok their name wasn't mentioned, but really that's beside the point).
I thought that ALL auctions were open to anyone, not just the person who requested the item. There is definitely a feeling that you should not buy an item that someone else has requested - and, unless the 'rules' have been changed, I think this is totally wrong.
There, I've had my blast - sorry if I've waffled on, but this hit a sore point!!

:12: :28:

Dingbat, I think if the requester had really wanted the item he/she would have put in a more realistic bid. Cynic that I am, I suspect people will bid low just to see the item, knowing that their 'automatic bid' is worthless. And yes, if it's an auction we are all free to bid, at least that's my interpretation.

Hi dingbat i was not around yesterday so did'nt see this but i agree with you entirely the auction is open for all to buy request or not.
If the person hit the buy button and got the requested item before the requester how come the person requesting did'nt have time to press buy ? after all they knew what it was if they had requested in the first place, so should of been hoovering over the buy button I would if I desperately wanted the item.I would'nt care if I'd beat them to it personally as you say all is fair in love and auctions,

From a personal point of view, it comes down to wether to bid on an item someone has requested...particularly if there is only 1 in the auction. I've had it happen to me before where an item requested has been snapped up by someone else so i can see both sides. Its really and honestly personal choice if you bid or not....no real right or wrongs. On the flip side the new request system means that if a bidder really wants an item then they have to put in a realistic bid to secure the item, also most peoples computer/internet settings arent all the same so someone could hit "buy" before the original requester also.

I don't think there are, or can be, any actual rules on this. Personally though, if I know it's someone else's request I'm inclined to hold back as a matter of courtesy. Having said that, I don't think I've ever been rewarded in life in general for good manners, simply trampled on and left holding the door (figuratively) - lol. I therefore couldn't recommend it to others.

I wasn't on rocks yesterday so missed this but an auction is an auction - first to click the buy button gets it simple!!

I have in the past missed out on requests but it was my fault as I wanted the price to drop a bit and someone else was happy to pay more :)

I sometimes wouldn't have a clue if it was someone else's request as I watch with the sound muted (what OH doesn't know, etc ;)). Unless someone in the chatbox makes a remark about the item, I'm in the dark. If I do jump in it's not bad maneers just lack of knowledge!

A very fair point Calvin. xx

I'm with you Calvin on this; when I watch I usually have my laptop on mute and never really turn on chat these days, so wouldn't have a clue if it was a request. On the other hand, I barely watch at all these days and I think it's upsets like this in general which have put me off a bit.

Nowadays I'm with Calvin too - I seldom have the sound on, but I often watch with one eye while I'm watching telly. If something I want comes up, I'll jump in - and wouldn't have a clue if it was a request or not.
I remember a while back someone bought an expensive 1 of a kind that someone else had requested, and the backlash in chat was a bit OTT as it was a regular that had been beaten to the punch.
Of course Karma's a bitch, and if you've done it to others, no doubt it will also happen to you!!! I know I've suffered too, but would never blame the purchaser, just my own stupid fault for holding out for another pound or two off...

I agree with everything you have all said, the actual thing that got to me was the fact that the presenter went on and on about it for the rest of the shift - instead of just letting it go straight away, because it was really anyone's piece of jewellery.

It's not their place to be doing that - IMVHO!

I agree dingbat, its a shopping channel after all! anyone can buy any of the items, if the requester wanted it so badly, they could buy it off of coloured rocks.

Well, I've just been beaten to a request I made earlier this afternoon and, as far as I'm concerned, it was just my own bad luck that I was beaten to it! Such is life! It's no big deal. :1:

My bid was only a couple of pounds away from what it closed at and it will perhaps be auctioned again later this evening by a different auctioneer. The only problem is that as I have already requested it once today, I can't go back in to increase my original bid to what it closed for this afternoon. I'm "locked in" to my first bid now so will have to be hovering over that button later and take my chances again!

Didn't realise that Perdita. Sure if you are requesting it again you can put another bid? First bid is null and void or is it me being stupid!

No, bh, your first bid holds until midnight on the day you requested it. I tried to re-request when I missed it (as I wanted to increase my bid by a couple of pounds to what it closed at) and was shown a message which said that my bid of £x had been accepted for today!

Hello everyone, just found this place today!

Gosh, I hope it wasn't me!! I requested an engagement ring yesterday and missed it by a second, then logged out.. Hope I didn't cause an issue!!
I had put what i thought was a reasonable bid in, but it went for a bit higher than I thought it would.. hadn't seen it before! Oh well, I won it today.. whoop!

Do you know what? If you request something, and multiple people like it, and someone else snaffles it before it goes down to a price you are happy to pay, TOUGH T*TTIES!!!! As you say, Dingbat, the auctions are open to EVERYONE and if you desperately want a piece then you need to come in at a realistic price and not whinge like a girl if someone else is willing to pay more. Sorry if anyone thinks that is a bit catty, but I can't abide when people try and lay a guilt trip on people because they have bought a piece of jewellry...ITS WHAT WE ALL GO THERE FOR FOR GOODNESS SAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

.......ok, rant over!!!

...and sorry if I upset anyone....love you all really!!! x

Hehe... hopefully it wasn't me then, cause I didn't whinge, just said "oh rats" and logged off!

Hey-up PR. Still as common as ever then I see! Oh well at least the naughty step is much bigger in here, but it's absolutely tatties <a href="http://plugin.smileycentral.com/http%253A%252F%252Fwww.smileycentral.com%252F%253Fpartner%253DZSzeb008%255FZNxpt484YYGB%2526i%253D36%252F36%255F12%255F14%2526feat%253Dprof/page.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/36/36_12_14.gif" alt="SmileyCentral.com" border="0"><img border="0" src="http://plugin.smileycentral.com/http%253A%252F%252Fimgfarm%252Ecom%252Fimages%252Fnocache%252Ftr%252Ffw%252Fsmiley%252Fsocial%252Egif%253Fi%253D36%252F36_12_14%2526uiv%253D3.0/image.gif"></a>

Trouble is - in this instance, if I have it right, is that 'twas the presenter making an issue out of it.

Yes Carol confirmed today that you can request an item only once! Makes sense but if you don't get it you have to wait for another day to request again!
