i am going to play devils advocate here and repeat the question and add " do we see qvc as our dear friend".....
elaborate......

Yes

Yes, boffy

I reckon that QVC has elements of evil-ness that we can't even begin to comprehend. "Special" prices that run out at the end of the hour/day etc combined with the fatal "it's limited stock" mean that we buy stuff that we don't need. It always makes me cringe when t-callers talk about no longer needing to shop anywhere else. QVC does not sell light bulbs, vegetables, groceries, milk - stuff you NEED - they sell stuff you WANT: bling, cameras, clothes etc. OK, maybe not clothes (but I have some beaut. Dreamkeeper things...)

I have one of those Lori Greiner cabinets full of Honora pearls, gold, silver, gems, you name it. And...believe it or not, I've fallen for diamonique, which is shiny, sparkly and wonderful in a shiny sparkly way.

Also, it's VERY easy to buy. If you've bought something before then getting on the phone and securing your order takes one minute. That's scary.

They are also REALLY skilled at selling (yes, I work in sales so I should know) and mostly focus on building a "picture" of how you would need something or use it in an aspirational way. Ok, some are better than others and some presenters I simply don't like very much (Daniel Green made my skin crawl and Jill Franks thinks she's a LOT funnier than she actually is. No, Jill, your stories are not "hysterical") but I know that I couldn't present on QVC, even with a shed load of training. Imagine all the bitching on here about me!!!!

I'm not against this. It's just that salespeople like me (long story) like to be sold to really really well. And they do...

Nope not a friend of mine, my friends don't want me buy things from them in large quantities to get a Christmas card from them.

And since I don't know much about the presenter, apart from their drivel, then nope they aint a friend just a glorified shopping mall.

is qvc evil

No silly, you're thinking of PayPal.....now they're 'evil'!

Is QVC my 'friend'? Hhmm, let me see now.....! :thinking2:
I buy stuff from QVC to see if I 'like it', then, if I do, i drop them like a hot potato (for that item anyway!) & go buy it somewhere cheaper!
Would I treat a 'friend' like that? No!

QVC for their part, rip me off with their p&p charges, even when I'm buying several things at once from them!
Would I treat a 'friend' like that? No!

Ergo.....QVC is not my 'friend'!

its interesting yazrose and you obviously know a lot about selling etc.
there is a phrase called average customer transaction . this is important to companies. coming in a shop and spending a small sum of money is not what its about.
good sales are per customer are important as they get the customers to spend and get acustomed to spending.
some presenters are getting very good at lulling you in. the training has upped its stakes over the last few months you can tell...
thats not a bad thing its business but when its dressed up in sheeps clothing....
and yes the customers who are spending vast sums are the only ones who get invited to customer events..
i can only shudder and try not to envisage what these vast summs are....
is qvc really my best friend.....
not if you can only get an invite cos you have spent all your pension money on things that are not really that essential.....

QVC did used to call themselves a family. I heard presenters say Welcome to the QVC family. Times have changed and now its all about the hard sell, easy pay, the squealing of AY celebs, celebs use this etc.
The presenters are not our friends, they try to come across as such. The TCallers give it away, remember me (fill name in here), I spoke to you 10 years ago. Presenter nods and smiles.

QVC have the market of home shopping telly covered in so many area. Sometimes I think they no longer even try. Products are cheaper elsewhere and availabe despite AY trying to tell us they QVC are the only UK outlet.

yes it is evil to an extent.

qvc does not take social responsibilty seriously, yes i know 'control' of oneself is a part, but qvc offers credit (easy pay) but no part of the qvcuk website, has a guide to shopping addiction, and guarantee from them that if you have an addiction problem they can puts steps in place (card blacklist)

even t callers will say i am totally addicted, only to have the presenter say thats great, imagine saying that to an online casino or such

they do not care, why should they all they want to do is sell, thankfully we now have farts set up lightheartedly tho i suspect will become more widely appreciated by us, and new members in future

you have to hand it to qvc such is their arrogance and skill they even convince some buyers their fanny/foofoo/betty/lady garden is an unaceptable colour, but hey they have the cure in two easy payments plus £5 p&p hey girls thats less than the price of a coffee nowadays

* Worries that her Lady Garden is an unacceptable colour *:wonder2:

pompoos jewellery...
we have all had great fun with this character (selling out rather quickly) of his let me say unusual jewllery...
but where would most everyday folk wear this ostentacious stuff..
his catchy one liners are" everyonewho wears my jewellery is beautifull"
everyonewho wears my jewellery is a princess....
seduction to the lonely, the weak believing everything that is told to them by the presenters.....their freinds!

whats that tigers eye our out of control lady garden or mr glockenspiel.......literally. lol
just food for though thats all..

Qvc are evilish now - years ago they had good ethics i believe - but now it is all about the bottom line. i dont think they need to be socially responsible though except to tell the truth. One example is those BE foundations in the tsv. They tried to kid their loyal buyers and that is very, very wrong. Sending returns as new items - that is evil. I don't mind having a clean return if it has been on waitlist but I want money off it as it is technically second hand. QVC is very powerful and the 30 day no quibble mbg is a lie as they do quibble if you are ott - but their selling ability is so powerful you cannot help it sometimes. That letter is evil as it is not honest. However, I enjoy QVC but i need to be more fart-like.

its a business, it is not meant to be good or evil, and it does not care about individuals, only profit. So silly question in my opinion.

Having been confined at home for some months, I can see how easy it is to be caught up with the "must have", "essential items" and the constant reminders of limited stock etc along with easy pays and "special days" (Beauty, Diamonique etc). If I were able to go into town, I'd have a look at what was available, try it on (if applicable) then decide if it was for me.

I might joke about PC & lappy being constantly on but the majority of us don't really sit on these things all the time whereas the TV is accesible to all and we all can be caught up in having a spend when we're bored/lonely/depressed. QVC are well aware of their customer demographic (incl vunerable/elderly) and are skilled in pressing the right buttons to encourage spending.
The majority of us have the choice to change channels and shop elsewhere but I do think that QVC make enough profit with their price points therefore they don't have to pile on the postage fees:devil:.

That said if it's convenient and you can afford it, then what you do with your cash is your own business

Hope that wasn't to big a rant:blush:

QVC is a bit like a friend who, when you say you are on a diet, says "Oh go on, have a bit of chocolate cake".

QVC's definitely not my friend!

She doesn't reply to my emails, only likes me for my money, is just after what she can get out of me, and insults my intelligence by not being completely honest with me about sizes and ingredients.

When I take the time to post messages on her site she deletes the ones she doesn't like.

She's always asking me to text her and call her but she doesn't even reply to my emails.

And if she feels she's not getting enough out of the relationship she sends a threatening blackmail -y letter.

She's a big user! :(

QVC is just as evil as any big business. They just have more access to us because they're in our bedrooms and living rooms. It's kind of like we've actually let the doorstep religious missionaries / Party Plan cosmetics lady move in!

I have a different perspective on the worth of QVC and have sympathy with the "vulnerable" and isolated customers.

I've been unable to work for a while due to severe depression, and throughout I found QVC very therapeutic. It is easy listening, no need to concentrate unless I want to buy something specific.

It might seem odd but it also gave me a "reason" to get up in the morning - I planned my day around their schedule and I could watch the repeats at 3am if I could not sleep.

Now I'm on the mend I am a bit more sceptical about them and join in with a lot of the banter on here. In fact this forum itself is also very therapeutic, for which I thank you all.

Excellent post - and to add - it's wonderful when you can just 'magically' get things through the post. Because the magic card lets you have them!

I know what you mean Erics Mum. Loads of us say we have it on for company don't we?

And I've been known to plan my days off around things like Beauty Day!

And I'm there very Tuesday looking at the newest weeks schedule.

Catherine Huntley is the one presenter who seems to understand the relationship between presenter and viewer in my opinion.

She's also the only one who says "send it back" much these days!

Glad you're feeling better hon, :flower:

I find it very soothing too and I can ignore most of the pitch and have it as background noise. I like the sounds of the happy, easy peasey chatter as I am padding about my flat, when nothing better is on the real channels.
