I'm sorry if this has been raised before but I wonder if anyone could tell me what exactly is the point of the initial prices shown for items on this channel?

Do they have any relevance at all?

Thanks everyone!

No, they don't have any relevance at all. They are just somewhere to start from, to enable them to have a falling price auction!

:Hiya: Mike

I'd would love to give you my answer but regretably I have my mouth well and truly zipped until Thursday night after 8:53pm. Sorry :)

Tell you what, Klos - I'm not coming anywhere near this forum without a hard hat after 8.53 p.m. on Thursday!

Watch your BP poppet......

Hey Klos......want to brrow this smilie for the last couple of days...........:mysmilie_770.gif:

Can't wait for your 'coming out'............

(With apologies to Mike for going offtrack).....

More apologies to Mike, but I think we should start preparing a separate forum for Klos in either the shed at the bottom of the garden, or in the outside privvy. I think the latter will be the most appropriate. xxx

Well I for one can't wait to have the real KB back! I miss her!!! This "new improved" KB isn't improved at all. Me no likey!

Mike - apologies for the threadjack! The start prices are a total fabrication but people unfortunately think it's an indication of worth - it's not. Absolutely not!

Sorry, Mike, we're a daft bunch..... glad you're not minding the diversions! I'm often aware that there are riotous digressions here and there that I'm adding too... sorry to all affected.....xxxxx

To return to the original subject of start prices......
I get frustrated at the often HUGE start prices..... they are totally ridiculous and the presenter drones on for ages , while, if you ARE interested in the item, you have no idea of whether it is going to come anywhere near a price you might be prepared to pay. Then, when it finally does get in a region you are interested in price wise, the item is put under a clock so there is little time to sort out payment details. Wouldn't it be more sensible to show a more realistic price to start with, so that you could transfer cash etc to prepare for a bigger purchase? I for one don't keep spare money lying around on the off chance that I'll see something to buy.... I move my piggybank stash as needed for larger purchases....I don't like credit cards with large limits, because of fraud possibilities! I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks like this...... am I??!!

If you think this is bad you want to read what they're saying about me and the Argey bird in the Bling section!! Isn't that right Mathilda and Pet Pixie!!

Start Prices

Wouldn't it be more sensible to show a more realistic price to start with said:
Absolutely! I don't use a credit card either, even with a small limit. I am less tempted to buy for the sake of buying that way. I find that I only buy something that I can truly afford and like you, I keep my money tucked up in various savings accounts. I have only what I need in the current account and have to make a transfer for more "considered purchases" as the presenters are so fond of spouting.

Hi Mike! I am a thread-jacker too, so apologies :)

The start prices are pure fiction, don't pay any attention to them. It used to be a general rule of thumb that the end price was around 10% of the start price but it seems to bear absolutely no relation to the final prices these days. Just ignore those stupid prices and as others have said, only pay what you think is reasonable. Often it is better to watch for a piece and see what it goes for. They usually come back and it will help you to have an idea of what you can expect to pay. Again though, it can be pot luck!

Hope you find something lovely for a decent price,

Inge :flower:

If you watch the other two jewellery channels, you will see that they no longer have such exagerated start prices because the ASA frown upon them.

The excuse that the starting price means nothing and is just a place to start is garbage! If it's just a place to start then why don't they start at a far lower and more sensible figure? Why start at £20,000+ to finally come down to £299 for example? It would be perfectly sensible to start at say £1000 and come down. I firmly believe they do it to try to kid people into thinking that the item they're selling is worth far in excess of the price they finally sell it at. Believe me there are people out there who do believe it but far more people who think it's a con and will never buy from them because of that.

It's about time Rocks & Co dropped all the kidology followed suit with Gems TV and TJC.

Oooooooooooooo Klos - that'll earn you a smack from a Rocks & Co employee coming on here in disguise :giggle: :giggle:
