Hello all,

I am looking for a bit of clarification and I hope that one of you will be able to guide me.

I am watching the Opals special hour on GTV with Angeline. She is selling opal triplets and just said you are getting "pure Australian Opal". As far as I am aware, you are getting a sliver of opal, sandwiched between a black backing and either a quartz or glass top. Maybe it was a slip of the tongue on her part. Otherwise it would be misleading.

Can anyone advise me?

Hi there,
I also tuned in to see the blue opals and was very disappointed to see that they were triplet rather than natural opals! My understanding of triplet is much the same as yours so im afraid i cant enlighten you anymore! Just wanted to say i was disappointed as i dont like the triplet at all and i thought they lookes very glossy and far too dark.

This link explains it well http://www.opalsdownunder.com.au/articles/doublets-triplets.php

I suppose when she said you are getting "pure Australian Opal" they could argue that the wee bit in the middle is "pure Australian Opal"? She should be explaining how they are made up though. It's a shame most of these channels think that less is more when it comes to giving information to their viewers!

I have to rush in to the defence of Gems in that Angeline did explain very clearly that triplets are exactly that even as precisely as that the top is resin. However, they were nonetheless shocking old tat, and I'm sure not from their usual "in house" or wherever manufacturer as they didn't look at all well produced. I watched both hours in total fascination as the stock just fell off the shelves so I suppose they supply what is demanded. Some glitter on a sliver of gold. Such a shame.

Heyup Klunkklik, still overenthusiastic about life I see. xxxxxx

I was amazed people were buying them so rapidly - they really were awful and very overpriced. Gems have had some lovely opals in their time, but as sure as heck these weren't they!

Hey Lurgey :Hiya:

I never watch Gems, I just replied to what Ballerina said and obviously added 2 + 2 and got 5!

I'm totally UNenthusiastic about life Lurgey - been feeling carp since May and they still don't know what's wrong with me! Getting to the stage where I'm thinking of going to the vet instead of the doc or maybe even a wee trip to Switzerland would be better - either way I may get put out of my misery!!

I know how you feel, sometimes i even wonder if doctors even listen to what your telling them.
Hope you feel better soon x

It's not good that GemsTV are selling these. I remember a few years back when they went to pains to say they NEVER sold doublets or triplets. Then we get stone fairies, tat tableware, handbags, pet stuff ............

I've also noticed that this weekend their prices have been incredibly high and stuff isn't selling (not surprisingly) for example, a 5ct Moissanite bracelet for £1,699! WOT??? Turn over to TJC and there's a 1ct diamond oval with two oval side stones totalling .25ct (so total ct of 1.50) for £1,699. I know which I'd prefer!

It's such a shame because some of their stuff is lovely. I really hope it's not a case of the shape of things to come.

Oh Klos, I really hope that you feel better soon. Keep pushing those doctors because you're the only one who knows how you feel.
I was so surprised to read last night that Gems are selling triplets (didn't watch the shows) and I also remember that they were very proud of their opals and boasted that they only sold 'the real thing'. I have some very pretty semi-black opals from them and they're lovely and solid - another backward step me thinks, but if they sold so well I can't really blame them.

and the Bronze Frogs, and those hideous cat type ornaments that they were trying to sell (earlier this year) and dont forget those mannequins! and the leather jewellery boxes and the valet boxes and the pashminas, and belts and the faux austrian crystal carp to boot! and yep, Gems prices have gone up - some of those one of a kind - well i will NEVER in a million years be able to own one - sometimes i am in shock when a ring goes for over £2,000.00, dont earn nothing like that per month in this household! it would be nice though! lolxxx

Thanks to everybody for your replies, I am glad I wasn't barking up the wrong tree. I like Angeline very much, so wasn't having a pop at her but she did say x carats of pure Australian opal. So, I just wanted clarification and it looks like a slip of the tongue. I recorded the show and watched it back and later in the show she did say how triplets were made up, so maybe she had somebody in her ear telling her to explain the technique.

I do feel it is another backwards step but as Jacqualina said, if they are selling so well, you can't blame them. However, I wouldn't want a triplet as there is only a sliver of opal, I read the useful link posted in an earlier reply on this thread.

Thanks again, you are all marvellous!

Inge xx

I did like the look of some of them, the ones containing more cobalt blue and red, and i did like the 3 free form pendants that she was selling - the colours were gorgeous, reminded me of petrol (or oil) in water - or like little pieces of the cosmos in a ring; If i was to get an opal, i would go for a lightning ridge piece - i prefer the black opals myself - i went on a australian opal website, my goodness there was some absolute beauties on it! I love all things colourful, and sparkley!!! i reckon i must have been a jackdaw in a former life! lol xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
