Hi gem experts
I am a bit confused, I just sat down to have a rest after painitng all day and watching TDand VB selling rubies.
The rubies are pink not red. It's not my tv. I have an HD and the colour is good .
R&C Tanzanian Ruby is not red either? It’s like a dark pink colour.

Well........

Hi Sapphireblue, good question but I'm not sure that the rhyme......Rubies are red, violets are blue..........
is exactly accurate. mysmilie_1436
Edit: I'm not sure I'm answering the question you've asked but had already done the post below, so might as well send it anyway, if that's alright!

I just did a google on the difference between sapphires and rubies and it said it was down to colour primarily. I was then directed to another site which Norton Security immediately flashed up as unsafe. Got the h*ll outta there pdq! Rubies are supposed to have a pink hue but it said the best rubies are a clear red......probably natural untreated Tanzanian ones.

I suppose we rarely see untreated rubies these days, certainly not on the shopping channels. So being Beryllium treated, heat treated, glass filled and god knows what else, they could end up being Sky Blue Pink.......now that's a thought mysmilie_1556 and is it now a Sapphire?

And now to hear from one of the gem experts.........:smirk:

Not a gem expert but ............. just me! :giggle:

Well, you've asked a good question and Sacha has actually answered it. It IS all about colour. However, what one person would call a Ruby, another may call it a Sapphire.

Here's an interesting article http://www.ruby-sapphire.com/ruby_sapphire_borders.htm

For me, Rubies are primarily red with maybe some pink - but if the pink overtakes then it becomes a pink sapphire. You see, the thing is that sellers can charge more for Rubies so .............. you'll see more pink "Rubies" now than you would have years ago.

Below you'll see two rings I own. The marquise, for me, is a proper Ruby. The other ring, although certified as a Ruby, is too pink and I honestly would call it a Pink Sapphire - in some lights it looks red (1st photo) but in others it's a fuscia pink (2nd photo). It is just on the cusp of being a Ruby.

You can buy natural, unheated, untreated Rubies but not from the shopping channels. Here:

http://www.africagems.com/unheatedruby.html Can you see how some are more pink and others definitely more red? Having said that, these are all what I'd call Rubies (unlike a certain channel as you say)!

http://www.naturalunheatedruby.com/ This guy is fairly expensive but specialises in natural untreated gemstones.

http://www.thenaturalsapphirecompany.com/Rubies/ Expensive but their CS is fantastic and the additional cost is worth it when you see the package that gemstones come in :tongue2:

Honestly? IMVHO there's too much sapphire on the jewellery channels being sold as Ruby.

Hi, Meeshoo and Sacha,
Thank you both for the links and info. I just thought it was me.
I am going to have a good look though the sites.
I think it’s very misleading of all the TV channels to call a pink sapphire a ruby when it’s not red.
By the way Meeshoo your rings are beautiful, I love marquise shape stones and the hexagonal shape ruby is stunning. I agreed that it's more pink than red but is beautiful all the same.
I am very envious.

I have 3 Ruby rings and funnily enough the only one which has any pinkishness (think I may have just made up that word!!) is the "Majestic Ruby" solitaire bought from Gems TV a few years ago. The other two are Burmese Rubies and are really red, just what I would expect a ruby to be. Neither of the Burmese ones are treated or filled but I'm not sure if they are heated. I will attempt to take pics tomorrow but as I am definitely not a graduate of the David Bailey School of Photography, don't hold your breath!!

Oh and I should warn you, they look rubbish compared to Meeshoo's ones!

I'm with you GC, do you think if we got enough of us together we could distract her? Not sure how fast we could run though, given how much we would be carrying :giggle:

The Marquise cut one is just gorgeous!

:Laughing1: Ha Ha love it! Glad to see you're protecting my inheritance Meeshoo :giggle:

I need to just state for the record that Klos is, unfortunately, dilusional. I love her dearly but whilst she has tried to convince me that we're twins, sisters, cousins, 10th cousins four times removed or at least friends, I have explained that I will, of course, be leaving everything I own to the great lab in the sky. In the event of my death my collection is to be melted / incinerated and mixed with my own ashes to make a multi coloured gemstone of indeterminate description! Could I also add here that if the bleeding lapidarist cuts me with a window I will be returning to extract dire revenge!

Or, if the above isn't possible, my collection should be given to my daughter to attract a very wealthy geezer of upstanding qualities to keep her in the style to which she'd like to become accustomed.

In the event of my untimely death - please note, KB, GC, Flossie - the Police have been given details of "certain" forum members to investigate!
