The ASA has upheld a complaint following a presentation on Price Drop TV, for an omelette maker, it showed the product being used to cook various foods, including a pie. At the end of the presentation several pies and a pizza were shown next to the product and a close up showed a cross-section of a pie in detail.

A viewer, who did not believe all the foods shown were cooked using the product, challenged whether the ad misleadingly exaggerated its capabilities.

Sit-Up Ltd the parent company of Price Drop TV said the pizza and pies shown at the end of the presentation were not cooked by the product but suggested to viewers the type of food that it was capable of cooking.

The ASA noted Sit-Ups response but considered that, in the context of the teleshopping ad, which showed a close-up demonstration of the product, viewers would expect the items shown to have been cooked using the product. Because this was not the case, and the pizza and pies at the end of the presentation appeared larger than the product itself, we concluded that the ad misleadingly exaggerated its capabilities.

The ad breached BCAP Code rules 3.1 (Misleading advertising) and 3.12 (Exaggeration).

The ad must not appear again in its current form. We asked Sit-Up to ensure that future ads demonstrating the product presented its capabilities accurately.
