I have bought some pieces of Alexandrite from Jewellery channels , for which I am grateful because they are creeping up in value .

But Csarite I am confused.

Wikipedia says Csarite,Zultanite,Ottomanite is just Turkish Diaspore of Gem quality . And all of it is mined in IIbir Mountains of South West Turkey.

Further investigation says just that Csarite, Zultanite, Ottomanite is clever marketing of Turkish Diaspore .

So I look on Ebay and Gemstone dealers from Thailand I see you can buy 1ct-2ct of VS quality Turikish Colur Change for about $10-$20 !

Am I missing something or is this the biggest marketing 'hood wink' of the shopping channels ? Csarite ? Zultanite?

I go to the jewellers , he laughs at me and says Csarite , Zultanite is just that Turkish Colour Diaspore and nothing more. He admits it is rare but the Ebay prices are about right .

Anybody on Gems TV, put right and perhaps contradict me?

Or should I buy direct from Thai Gemstone dealers on ebay @ $10-$20 per 1ct-2ct for VS quality ?

You can get any gemstone on Ebay for much less than elsewhere but it doesn't mean it will have the colour shifting properties OR have the clarity.

Zultanite/Csarite are marketing names for Diaspore. Diaspore has been found in a few locations but from a gem quality standpoint, Turkey has the largest find. Having said that (and I've been there), the amount of Diaspore coming out of the mine is very small. GemsTV have a relationship with the mine owner so they are able to have the pick of the crop and so get good quality stones. The ones on Ebay (and you can buy it elsewhere too) will be hit and miss in terms of quality.

Regarding the price per carat, this is not a particularly well known gemstone despite the push by GemsTV a few years ago. For some reason it hasn't really taken off like some other gemstones so the price per carat is not yet as high as some others. It may never be or it may suddenly capture the imagination of the general public and with demand the price will increase.

In terms of Alexandrite - prices have gone up 10 fold since GemsTV had a regular supply. Mining is fairly limited and what is being mined is not particularly abundant with good clarity/colour change gems. Even big players in the gemstone market find it difficult to get this stone now so good ones are really "rare" and I don't use that word lightly. So if you have a good one, hang onto it. Don't be tempted to sell!!!!

Yes I watched the GEMS TV videos of having that special relationship with mine owner
And yes I watched the explanation that special mine owner had to change a financial backer and now call it Csarite

BUT WHY does ROCKS & CO still call it Zultanite and they tell us about their special relationship with a mine owner . Did this only mine owner have the right to sell it to Rocks & Co as Zultanite but this only mine owner have to sell it to Gems as Csarite????????

So I how many mines are there? And how many special relationships are going on?

Is it Zulatnite ? Csarite ?

I have just bought from Ebay ... fromChanthaburi ( a seller with 4000+ postive feed back) some Diasapore from Turkey with a certificate . fantastic colour ( mossy green to golden peach in the fridge)
I bought 5 pieces averaging 1.5cts each and only paid £7.50 per gemstone??????

So I am still confused...................................and ask myself is this the cleverest of marketing of all time?

I love my Alexandrite but I understand that there is some Tanzanian Alexandrite around , I just bought a certified piece 1.75ct of Tanzanian Alexandrite for £101. More a mossy green with orange colour change but then a little bird let slip on Rocks & Co , that there has been a new find of Russian Alexandrite .............so we must keep our eyes and ears open.

But I am still head scratching at the whole Zultanite, Csarite, Ottomanite, Diasopore thing ???? I think I smell a rat ................
 
Ahhhhhhhhhh? It still makes me wonder why GEMS TV sell Turkish as Csarite and have a sole special relationship with the mine owner of MML?

And why do ROCKS & CO still sell it as Zulantanite and also have a sole special relationship with the mine owner of MML ?

And yet the mine owner is now trading it as Turkish Diasapore , which is a beautiful rare gemstone , but not quite the hype that Gems TV and Rocks & CO lead us to believe .

Well it is snowing outside and I have nowt else to do , so I am writing to trading standards and ask them to answer my question , "Just what are we buying and who actually is correct? Or is this all incorrect marketing and both Gems TV and Rocks and Co being inaccurate with what Csarite , Zultanite or Turkish Diasopre and who out of the two Tv channels has the sole special rights that we keep hearing about??
 
My research shows that Csarite is brittle? Just how brittle is brittle? Don Cogan kept saying how fantastic sphene was (he probably is sitting on a mountain of it) and yet I read that sphene should not be used in rings as it is too brittle? Any opinion, real gem sellers?

Well What you may have received from EBAY may be either a low quality diaspore (CARB) which may not be necessary a gem quality.

Gem quality Zultanite/Csarite is 98% waste and 2 percent production.
Diaspore are bye product in bauxite mine and to find gemquality diaspore is itself rare. The last one before Turkey was in URAL in Russia in year 1800s

Natural GEM quality non enhanced Gemstone Diaspore is very RARE in the first place and then getting it cut by internationally acclaimed cutters who can bring in desired results is very difficult, most of this cutters are in Europe and Northern America.

Well about brand name: the company which is mining is calling it as Csarite and Another wholesale buyer /dealer/partner has branded it as Zultanite: Rose by any other name would have smelled perfume and would have looked same.

So you can be happy with a 8 pound thailand stone and the celebrities will be happy with theirs at 8,000 pounds (every one has his league - If you would have been multi millionaire, you would have paid 8,000 pounds and not buy on ebay - even if the stone was same )(e.g you pay 30 cent for a mineral water bottle, but when in an exclusive brand restaurant in five star resort hotel, you pay 13 $ for same water bottle and THAT IS NO SMELLING RAT).
Bye the way there is a stone called IOLITE and looks like sapphire - On ebay there is a seller wanting to sell 155 carat sapphire for 15 GBP.

In any case you may reply and put link of the ebay for other buyers who wish to buy from thailand and get some blessings, even my friends can share this and be owners of some diaspore gemstones.

That is cheap enough to buy out of mere curiosity. If it IS genuine, then you've got a bargain. If not, no big loss. Gonna pop over to ebay for a tic...
 
Sandy1234...Newbie . Me thinks you either on the defense for one of these Shopping Channels or The MML mine owner, who likes to block anyone trying to sell Zultanite or Csarite on Ebay , to keep the prices artificially high. Because I have in my hot little hand a letter than MML are being investigated for the cleverest marketing of all time . The Turkish Diasapore started as Ottomanite and depending on which bank funded the mining at that time it was called different name , Ottomanite , Zultanite or Csarite . Because each bank put copy rights on the name and hence the name changes . Now the miner calls it good old Turkish Diasapore because on the investigation , probably

It is the same gemstone just marketed under two different names (3, if you look for Turkish Diaspore). There's no conspiracy, just depends when it was bought, who from and by whom!

In terms of Alexandrite, it comes from various different locations including Tanzania. What is sold as Russian Alexandrite is highly likely to be from elsewhere as production in Russia was tiny and most is in specialised collections. There's a fabulous book all about Alexandrite and it goes into production amounts which is a real eye opener!
