Tahitian Pearl - opinions please

Hi Guys,

I have this TP ring in my basket which is a fairly major purchase for my pocket - but I do love the design - very classical Italian http://www.gemstv.co.uk/Shop/productDataSheet.jsp?productid=UZY6590&menuselection=0 It's a shame you can't see the profile, it's terrific.

With the discount it works out at £135, and asside from the fact that I love it, do you think it constitutes fair value. I'd love to hear from anyone who's interested and Meesh, if you're around, I'd appreciate the benefit of your expertise. I'm aware that I'll need to be careful with it, particularly as it set high, but otherwise I know nothing of these pearls, beyond they are very pretty.

ooooh argey........I think that is the 1st TP I have seen on gems in yellow gold!I would love a tahitian pearl myself,tbh they are never gonna be cheap!!:20:

For what it's worth imo(which ain't much I know!!) I don't think it's a bad price.The pearl is a good size and there is a good gram weight of gold too and most importantly,what cannot be quantified in price is the fact that you love the design.

I very much doubt that you could get a ring such as this much cheaper anywhere else in all honesty,and even last year,before prices of things generally increased,TP rings were often at the 3 figure mark with probably half the gold weight too.

Sorry Argey, the voice of dissent here. My personal preference is for TP's in w/g, I just don't think they suit y/g, although it is a pretty design. I've noticed the price of TP's have rocketed on Gems, I've had 2 rings in the past, both with the same size pearl as yours, and they were substantially cheaper.

My opinion is irrelevant if it's something you really want and can afford, and know you will love and wear a lot.

I'm sure someone with actual knowledge will be along, but I do recall Gems saying that a good TP has a definite green 'orient'.

I am like M4G, much prefer it in White Gold, it just looks so much nicer but it is what you like that matters and if you love it then go for it.

First up I'd say that you've got a great price. The goldweight alone means that the ring is a deal (gold is going through the roof at the mo). The TP is also a good size at 9mm. To quality as a TP the pearl must be at least 8mm.

In terms of what colour is best? The basic colours are green and grey tones but you can get ones that look bronze, peacock green/blue and my absolute favourite of purple (which is also the hardest to get).

A pearls value is judged on shape (i.e. rounded and not pitted), thickness of nacre (i.e. the skin) and this is difficult for you to judge and unless you're an anorak like me I wouldn't be too bothered about it and the colour.

I own a number of TPs from Gems and love them all. Curiously they're all in white gold and as Sweetpea said, the price shot up recently. The price you're paying is the price that a good ring was about 2-3 years ago. They're normally much more expensive now. However, you can also get some from the internet from specialised TP dealers. My only hesitation - and I'm mentioning it because it's only fair to do so (and I found out AFTER I'd bought mine from GemsTV) - is that if a pearl is dyed it's not technically a TP. A TP has to be naturally occuring and not dyed. I believe that the Gems TP's are dyed. However, as I said, I own a number and love them. Compared to an undyed TP you can't tell the difference (I have both).

Argey that looks quite a good price for what you are getting and as you love the design then that means more than enough to get it

It looks very 'Versace' inspired to me. It's certainly a very 'different' design from the usual Tahitian pearl rings I've seen and not one I'd go for. That shouldn't influence you, though, as we all like different things and if you have that flutter of excitement when you think of it on your finger then it's destined to be yours. Not much help, am I? Lol

I agree with Meesh regarding the value etc., I bought TP's around the same time as Meesh from gems and we did get ours at a very good price. If you like it go for it!

I love it - I have been thinking of getting one of Gems TH Pearl rings for some time, they are expensive (in a what we normally shop for way) but much cheaper than high street jewellers, and if you love it, its worth it. I love yours, the design is very elegant and its a great big look. Wait til you get it home then you can really make up your mind. Plus you would be careful with anything you paid over £50 for I reckon.

Anyway, I love it and the fact it's set in yellow gold to me is a bonus cos although I have some white gold I'm a yellow gold girl at heart! The price looks good to me too as I've seen them a lot higher in price.

I loved it in the yellow gold, but see why others wouldn't. I'm someone of extremes - I love big lumps of jewellery, but on the other hand I also like a totally plain solitaire (in the true sense, not Gems' presenters' terminology).

Ah well - I shall selfishly leave it in my basket just in case (of what I don't know). Perhaps next month it will still be around as it did have to go to clock, and they still didn't shift them all. I'm another who bought Gems TPs in white gold some time back in 2007. They did mention then that the diamonds were SI clarity and I've not heard this said in the latest batches. Even back then I believe the prices started out quite high and then gradually dropped so that some of us did get good deals. Eg I paid £99 for the 'Sputnik' - I love it but had no idea that Gems' TP's may be dyed!!

However, back to yours.......I think its a very elegant design and the shoulders look very sculptured but sturdy. The diamonds are minimal, one on each side, but they are just adornment, the 9mm pearl and the shank design are the important features on this ring. Apparently they've introduced this YG range as a result of having so many requests...I heard it said. I'd definitely get it home so you can see how it feels and looks on your finger. Better to do it now with such a good discount! :5:

I think it's lovely Argey. I'm not keen on white gold and I love the TP in the yellow. The design is really nice too. Unfortunately family always wins out when it comes to the bit, but I hope you manage to get it eventually.

Such a shame you love it so much but just can't go for it Argey - maybe some unexpected cash will turn up before the basket police nick it!
My advice would have been split - seems like a good price, and if you love it you should definitely go for it, funds permitting. Six months down the line, you don't even remember what else you would have done with the cash! (Yes, I do use that one myself for the pricier pieces lol).
On the other hand, I actually don't really like the ring myself!!! I'm not a lover of yellow gold, and I think white suits Tahitians so much better.
Sputnik on the other hand, how much did I want one way back in the day - and seeing the link again, I'm still massively jealous of all the FMs who got one.

Sorry Argey, I've arrived late too. If you really love it and think it's the one for you then send for it and see. The discount is well worth taking advantage of and you may find that the one you get is grey and not what you want at all. Gems TP's do vary a lot, you won't know if it's for you until it arrives. Having said that, yellow gold does seem unusual and whether it is worth it or not is an aside, it's how much you will value it when it's in your clutches. If in doubt, send for it and see, you'll know for definite that way. :spider:

Just for info peeps, just seen Scott selling a Tahitian pearl and categorically said that Gems do not dye their Tahitian pearls, he said they leave that to nature. Think someone must have read this thread.

Argey .... I've just seen "your" ring go for £99 and the matching pendant went for £89.
