Read on to discover this gemstone’s story.

From Cleopatra to conquistadors, the quest for its rare, beautiful greens has made Emeralds one of the world’s most coveted and valuable gemstones. While Emeralds are mined in Afghanistan, Brazil, Pakistan, Russia (Ural Mountains), Zambia and Zimbabwe, since the 16th century a Colombian pedigree has become synonymous with Emeralds of exceptional quality. Today Colombia supplies around 60 percent of the world’s Emerald output and about 80 percent of its highest qualities.

Colombia’s leading Emerald mines are situated in the western foothills of the Andes Mountains in an area known as the ‘Emerald Belt’. While marketplace demand for Colombian Emerald is high, especially in finer qualities, the renowned Brazilian gem hunter, Tony Diniz, was able to secure some exceptional examples during a recent gem hunt in Colombia.

The source of these Colombian Emeralds is Muzo, the world’s most famous Emerald mine. Muzo is Colombia’s oldest mine and has been producing since before conquistadors conquered the local inhabitants in the mid 16th century. Located in Boyacá on the banks of the River Mineró, Muzo produces about 50 percent of Colombia’s Emeralds. Prized for their classic vivid ‘Muzo’ greens, Colombian Emeralds from the Muzo mine are noted for their exceptional quality. Cut is very important for Emeralds and each piece selected by Tony has been faceted by some of Colombia’s best Emerald lapidaries.

Each piece of fine jewellery featuring Colombian Emerald comes with an ownership booklet that guarantees its authenticity. A modified version of this booklet is available online as an e-zine at www.rocksandco.com, simply click on the banner above.

You can shop online with Rocks & Co. at www.rocksandco.com or watch them live on Sky channel 642 (8am - 2am) and Freeview channel 49 (8am - 10pm).
