Diet Chef - vegetarians beware

i am not suprised at qvc or the presenters they talk for hours about a product all fluff and puff but no real info...

this diet chef fad thing is about hard sell and before it goes out of favour as these things surely do. letting the consumer know whats in its food product is not on the agenda.

diet chef more than likely does not have a dedicated veggie but who cares look at the high price point...qvc is a real hard sell company and as much as i get enjoyment fron qvc it does not see fit to give all the info if it will ultimately lose a sale!

I wouldn't buy Diet Chef anyway as it's a rip-off. If you just ate a tiny portion of your usual meal and added the veggies you'd still lose weight. But as a veggie I'd be disgusted to find out this had fish oil in it.

There was an article on the BBC News website a little while ago about this issue. The Vegetarian Society defines vegetarianism in a joky way as "We don't eat dead stuff!" i.e. no product from anything that had to die to provide it. That means fish oil cannot be sold as a vegetarian option and, in my opinion, this should be reported to Trading Standards or the ASA.

Can't say I'm surprised at QVC though. Not the first time I've seen this. I've been using Gale Hayman's lip lift for years and found out by accident after an Ebay purchase that it is full of mineral oil. They never mention that on their shows because it's a "bad" product normally.

I've sent the details to the Vegetarian Society magazine's editor. I hope they can stop this being repeated with one of the options marked as Vegetarian when it clearly isn't. I know quite often on QVC items the "blue" cardigan is "more like green" but I think this is a lot more serious.

its a funny thing about mineral oil it is widely used in hospitals for burns as it has healing properties and is known not to give much alleries but in the beauty industry some companies will have it that this is a bad thing.
its cheap and does the job!

and very well respected in the pharmacetical industry.

I sent a strongly worded e-mail to QVC last night,I'm not holding my breath for a response. However, the more of us who do say something, increases the odds of them actually adressing this issue properly.

This is the cod response-no pun intended-I received from the powers that be.

Hi Miss ************

I would like to advise that QVC are currently investigating your comments
regarding the Diet Chef (vegetarian) option.

I have sent your query to our buyers for them to look into this a little
further.

I'm reading this thread with a bit of bemusement. The problem isn't in the way they've said its "suitable for vegetarians" but in the actual understanding of the types of vegetarians. Take look at the wiki entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegetarianism under terminology. Confusing?

I'll hazard a guess that most people who claim they are vegetarian won't be able to categorise themselves. Is it any surprise that everything is lumped under a single banner with many differing interpretations?

i have had people tell me they are vegetarian but eat chicken.
i dont even argue with them as that does not sound like a vegetarian to me.

People who say they are veggie and then say they eat chicken and fish annoy the pants off me.
They treat vegetarianism as if it's a fad, akin to wearing a designer label.
There's a bit more to it than that and they ought to educate themselves...

What a surprise, I got exactly the same response.

My daughter is a vegetarian and I am still educating myself so as not to give her stuff by mistake....E numbers need to be watched:bandit: for example.

Quite true.
My very simplistic definition of a vegetarian, is someone who doesn't eat anything which comes from a creature with a working set of eyes.

What a surprise, I got exactly the same response.

It figures,lol.

Yes,you have to be careful as some e-numbers are made from insects.

As a veggie of 20 years it also bugs the pants off me when people call themselves veggie but eat chicken etc. When I stopped eating red meat but still ate chicken and fish I called myself semi-vegetarian and people seemed to go with that and understand. I also hate the attitude that we vegetarians are weirdos or just being awkward. I've actually had a colleague give a fellow veggie a sausage roll at the work do (pretending it was a veggie one) and then WET themselves laughing when the veggie realised in horror they were eating meat. WTF?

What shocks me is that having been veggie for that long I didn't realise that some E numbers were made from insects??! Unless you're referring to cochineal which I did know about. Any others?! Clearly I need to update my research...

Sorry, a little off topic there but I'm really not surprised at QVC, they play fast and loose with their item descriptions at the best of times and frankly will say anything to flog their products, despite always telling us that they're monitored more carefully than anyone else and have to be legally responsible blah blah blah. Don't believe it for a minute...

What is a vegetarian?

http://www.vegsoc.org/info/whatis.html

"We define a vegetarian as someone living on a diet of grains, pulses, nuts, seeds, vegetables and fruits, with or without the use of dairy products and eggs. A vegetarian does not eat any meat, poultry, game, fish, shellfish or crustacea, or slaughter by-products."

I've actually had a colleague give a fellow veggie a sausage roll at the work do (pretending it was a veggie one) and then WET themselves laughing when the veggie realised in horror they were eating meat. WTF?

OMG! that's terrible! i hope when they'd recovered, a swift smack in the mouth to the offending article followed...:taphead:

That is disgusting and I hope they were formally disciplined as it happened at work.

Would they think it equally amusing to give a muslim pork?

There was a horrible incident that resulted in the cops getting involved where the bodies of Muslims in a hospital mortuary were frequently being "decorated" in raw bacon while being stored there. Some poor relative brought in to identify a body was treated to the spectacle. The hospital brought in the police.

I also know a woman who gave a teetotal guest in her home drinks spiked with vodka, then she called the cops giving the ladies car reg as a tip off so she got done for DUI.

Point being there are some very unsavory people out there and I wish they were easy to spot and therefore avoid.

Unfortunately most of the senior people there also thought it was quite funny until I went MENTAL at them (as did the other poor veggie) and finally the gobsh!te who gave him the sausage roll was forced to apologise. But most people just thought the vegetarians should lighten up. I work in the music industry where it's largely felt that if you're anything other than a rampant alcoholic/cheater/drug user then you're a square. So vegetarians are just weirdos. Luckily I work in another company now where the staff are far more mature and normal!

I mailed QVC this afternoon to complain about the DC too, let's hope all of us contacting them makes some difference...

Yes,Cochineal is the main culprit, here's a list,it's not comprehensive, but it's enough to be getting on with.
