Oiling I wouldn't be worried about but filling and diffusion I would be (unfortunately it's becoming more common nowadays). Thank you for this suggestion. I've ordered two Boyaca emeralds (still waiting for one to be delivered), they're the first one's I've every bought and consequently I have no idea how many inclusions or treatments are acceptable, I've emailed TJC asking what treatments they generally carryout and what specifically has been done to the one's I've ordered, I'm awaiting their answer. Meanwhile I would value any input and guidance from members of the forum :mysmilie_513:

I hope Sue doesn't mind me gate-crashing her thread but here's some info on Emeralds:

1. Oiling - has been around since Egyptian times and nothing to worry about. However, you DO need to know as oils dry out. This can happen anything from 5 years to 50 years and depends on the actual oil used and the amount. Obviously oil is used to lessen the look of the jardin in a stone. When it dries out, you will see the jardin more and you might (depending on the oil treatment) see a whiteish look with a loupe. Re-oiling can be carried out by specialist jewellers and it's not vastly expensive.

Lightly oiled or totally natural Emeralds are the ones that are the most desired/expensive. They're also the rarest!

Typically, Emeralds that have been moderately to heavily oiled are the ones available on the market.

2. Filling - I wouldn't knowingly buy a filled Emerald but this really is down to the individual and their tolerance levels for treatment. There are again different types of fillers on the market and the more modern ones are coloured. There is a filler called Opticon which is a green type filler that is now widely used and accepted. Although I have to say that I would only want this if the Emerald wasn't top dollar. However, I accept that I'm not the "norm"!!! Opticon is reasonably longer lasting and doesn't require re-doing as often as oiling.

The older type of fillers can crack, discolour and dryout and might need re-doing at some point. Obviously anything that's filled has the potential for a weakness in the gemstone.

3. Composite Emeralds - these were quite rare but are becoming increasingly seen. Basically you take a rubbish Emerald and glue bits together to make a bigger Emerald.

Thanks for your input and links very informative. I guess it's really down to the individual piece and how much you like it whether the inclusions and treatments are acceptable or not! Will have to wait for the second one to arrive to be able to compare the quality of the stones and the answers from TJC before I decide which one, if either, I decide to keep, you never know I might see something even nicer !

What a totally gorgeous ring Sue! :heart: The emerald looks superb and I love the design with the different cuts of diamonds.

I'm so pleased for you hon that it turned out to be everything you wanted. It came to a very good home and I know you'll get lots of enjoyment out of owning this beauty.
