The presenter claimed that these heaters are cheaper to run than a fan heater because they are thermostatically controlled and because the oil takes longer to lose it's heat before the thermostat kicks in and that it wouldn't switch on as much, what he didn't mention is that it's also a lot slower heating oil first than direct to the air. The only difference is the heat transfers to the oil before it transfers to the air Given the same thermostatic control of a fan heater (or any other type of variable thermostat heater), they all cost the same to run including the expensive storage type. That's not to say that these De Longhi oil filled heaters or the Energitech ones sold on Ideal World aren't well engineered, constructed and more aesthetically pleasing to look at and may last a lot longer. It's simply that you can't get something for nothing, and if you aren't bothered about noise and looks a £10 fan heater off the market will do the job. All electric heaters are 100% efficient in turning electricity into heat and rather than how slowly a heater releases it's heat, it's how slowly and well insulated the last barrier (your home) is in preventing heat transfer to the outside as possible that counts as the slower the heat goes, the less often a heater's thermostat switches it on irrespective of type.

I agree, a 2KW electric heater will give out the same heat whatever type it is.

A radiant fire (one that glows red hot) may burn your legs but not heat up the room very quickly.

A fan heater will heat the room quickly, but causes a draught.

An oil radiator takes a while to heat up.

All 2KW heaters cost exactly the same to run (except for proper storage heaters that come on during the night on a cheaper tariff).
