Pumps is what my grandad called plimsolls in the 1960's. He was a Yorkshireman like Glenn Campbell.

Or as in the Two Ronnies sketch:

"Pumps please"
"Pumps ? Foot pumps, tyre pumps, balloon pumps ?"
"Pumps - black size 7"

I think terminology must change over time. Pumps often mean high heeled slip on shoes the days. In my youth my mum and gran called those court shoes. We wore gym shoes, sometimes called plimsolls.
