I would give my right arm just to be able to take my three little Yorkshire Terriers for a walk. Instad, I pay someone to take them three times a week. Apart from having osteoarthritis, I have no idea what is wrong with me, but life is no fun. I’m 72 now and was always reasonably fit and walked for miles, I don’t recognise my life now, but I have suddenly in the past months got terrible balance problems, so acared I fall all the time. Very down because of all these changes, and feel vulnerable.

All I would tell Julia is be careful of your boasting because I never said so at the time, but I looked better and was fitter than you boast of being now. You need to take some length off your hair too.

Julia your health and look can change in a heartbeat!
I am the same age OHNO, with arthritis (like most I suspect at our age). I do walk my dog every day, but have noticed in recent months my legs ache dreadfully - not painful, but its got so that I cant walk as far. So I have some understanding how you feel, though my balance is ok. It may be that you have a problem with your ears, and low blood pressure can also affect balance, so why not try having a word with your pharmacist, as getting an appointment anywhere in Britain with your doctor is akin to winning the lottery !!!!

I'm wondering if my problem is due to starting Statins, as I've heard that some people get aching muscles when taking them. I'll live with it for the time being, as its not something I can take a photo of and send to my cyber GP !!

Mml, a doctor told me ten years ago that Xrays showed that my back was in such a bad way (arthritis) that I'd end up in a wheelchair and there was nothing she could do for me. My reaction was, well, sod you, if you won't help me I'll have to help myself. I found some very easy exercises (some I concocted myself) for the back, knees, hips and shoulders which I started in a very small way and I've built up slowly to a steady, not strenuous, ten minutes every day which keeps me mobile. I never miss a day. I walk a lot, too. You don't have to start at the top, just one gentle exercise one day, same one the next, add on a bit of time or another exercise and gradually build up. The secret is to keep moving. I hope this helps because arthritic pain is awful and you have my sympathies.

I changed my doctor's surgery and a couple of weeks ago passed the same doctor at a zebra crossing. She stared at me as if to say, you still walking around? I ignored her. But unwittingly, she said the best thing she could have to help me so I suppose I should be grateful.
That is such sound advice, crystal. One of the key prinicipals of yoga is that you only push yourself as far as you can go without the feeling of exertion. The more you do it, you gradually begin to develop your strength and flexibility so you can push yourself a little bit further as you progress. It's not only good for hour muscles, it increases blood flow to your internal organs and you begin to feel better all round. If you start with exercises that involve your good areas, you strengthen those and it helps you to focus on the areas you need to take it more slowly with. I love my yoga practice hours.

Brissles I am diabetic my cholesterol has sinc the 80s been 5 when the British Heart Foundation then recommended 6, so it has never been high, but my doc put me on statins in 2019 simply because if you are diabetic they prefer it below 5. It is now 4.3. However I had to come off i and it is no longer on my repeats because of muscle pain on top if arthritis. I have not been able to walk with holding on to something now for well over a year as my arthritis on my spine and both hips, legs and arms is too awful and I don’t say that lightly. I probably need my ears checked but it’s not low bp as I’m on meds for high bp. Thanks anyway.

I still look better than Julia Roberts at 72 let alone when I was 61 LoL

What do GPS do these days? I am sure very valuable things but seeing patients face to face is not one of them.I think a lot of routine tasks which would have at one time been covered by a Dr. are now being dealt with by clinical people of different specialisms. There is some concern with my Cholesterol reading so I am booked in for a telephone conversation with a Clinical Pharmacist in 2 weeks.

I have been on Statins for years but when first diagnosed my diet following Weight Watchers was as good as you could get.My first statin I couldn’t take as it got to the level I had difficulty getting out of a chair. They changed that and dropped the dosage & no problems since. My high Cholesterol I was told was hereditary rather than diet.I still have a good diet but during lockdown and other stresses I have lapsed a few times but I don’t think anything major. It does give you a wake up call though and that is no bad thing.

Re: balance problems, have you had your vitamin D levels checked? A friend of mine in her 80s, fit and active, found on testing that she had a serious vit D deficiency, and improving that improved her balance issues.

Yes, I remember it being posted on here a few years ago.
It was the police mug shot when she was arrested for drink driving.
She looked dreadful.....as you would in such circumstances

I detest drink drivers 🤬
Absolutely. Using a vehicle under influence of drink or drugs turns it into a weapon & the law should reflect that fact.

Vitamin D is so important & people don't realise it works like a hormone - a vitamin for all the body.

Statins cause more problems and solve none. familial hypercholesterolemia cannot be diagnosed without a blood test which is never done as it is expensive. Any excuse to dish out these poison pills

I thought how lovely Julia looked this evening in that yellow jacket with the black! Personally, I think she looks fab anyway and she has always been one of my favourite presenters right from the start. Very bubbly and natural!

Not bad from the waist up but not good from the waist down! Those leggings and the black version of the “new dancer feet shoes” are terrible it would have been much better with a maxi dress as the black and yellow did suit her.

"Natural" "bubbly" and "Julia" don't always fit in the same sentence. She's a good-looking woman who should by now know better how to dress to suit her shape. She can be an informative presenter but that sadly is overshadowed a lot of the time by silly comments (only joking).

I too have one of these, I bought it off a friend, still in the box. She bought it in 2007 and she said the only exercise she’d had was dragging the box upstairs and shoving it under the bed! Ive had it for 7 years and am just in the process of being made redundant, I have tidied out the spare room, the machine is out of the box and all I have to do is drag it upstairs and set it up but like MML I also have sore arms so I need to be careful. I’m off to see a physiotherapist in a couple of weeks before my BUPA subscription ends. I don’t expect it to make me look like Margerine Burgervan, I just need to strengthen my muscles 💪

Assuming your Bupa is included in your work benefits you could ask if you could keep it as part of your redundancy but pay the cost yourself.

I've no idea if you'd be able to afford it but my friend was made redundant and managed to keep his as part of his package. It's considerably cheaper than just paying it yourself and has been worth its weight in gold for my friend.

Aching muscles and bad balance are things I'm too familiar with for my liking these days.

I started taking magnesium in a supplement and also use it topically and found a great reduction in aches and restless legs.

I've always thought that I eat healthily but have never considered whether I have enough magnesium in my diet, just looked at the foods that contain it & I don't eat ANY of them 😧 Braving torrential rain to go out to get hay so will call into eco/health shop & find a supplement, thanks alter 💐

I love to see her when she looks good, and in the right clothes - she does. If like Julia, you are large around the bust and carry a lot of weight around the middle, but have relatively slim arms and legs, and lack height, you need to think a bit harder about how you dress if you don't want to look comical, or downright awful. I'm not saying that people don't have the right to dress how they please, regardless of what others think - BUT, she's working on a shopping channel and is often trying to sell the outfits she's wearing. No doubt many viewers share her height and figure and I very much doubt they're looking for something that accentuates their lumps and bumps and makes them look shorter, or just silly! I'm blaming Q more than anything - why employ a team of stylists when they send their presenters, and their models (especially the larger ladies) in ill fitting clothes, often in colours and styles that clearly don't suit them?!
With regards to the Pilates machine, of course it should be demonstrated by people wearing the appropriate gear, skintight lyrca doesn't look great on anyone unless they're slim and toned. My issue is that Julia as a purportedly long term user (21 years no less) would not convince me that I need to part with £430!
My observations in this case aren't about her personality or presenting skills, tbh I really don't mind her at all. I also know she's been through a lot, and whether or not you're interested in the books she writes, her blogs and instragram, you can't deny that she's succeeding in life - and good on her!

I checked out the footage of her in the yellow jacket/black outfit underneath..and I agree, it really suited her and fit well!

I don’t think I have specifically had vitamin D checked, but each year from September until April for years, I have taken vitamin D suppliments, so perhaps not low, but I could always ask!
