Help Support ShoppingTelly:

Could be an Alexa - - - - I am getting fed up with mine.

Example from today:

Me: Alexa, set reminder

A: What's the reminder for?

Me: Radio

A: What time?

Me: 12 noon.

A: Ok I'll remind you at 12 noon (AND IT OFTEN TAKES 1/2 DOZEN ATTEMPTS FOR "HER" TO GET THE TIME RIGHT)

LATER, AT 12 NOON.

A: Here is your reminder, IDIOT

We’ve got 3. I agree she sometimes gets the name of the items on the shopping list wrong. We’ve noticed that reminders are only stored on the machine you spoke to but she does sent the reminder to my phone. We also have 2 Google machines.

We have the Google one. About the most I ever ask it to do is “play TalkSport radio” when I go out and leave the dog on her own.
OH, however, is obsessed, has it programmed for all sorts;
“Google, turn on living room telly, Google, turn on bedroom telly, play YouTube on bedroom telly, what’s the weather today, etc, etc.
I’m pretty certain if he could, he’d use it to control me.......😄

well scrap that last one then

Having spent 2 hours trying to set up an Alexa in OH's house (just 5 minutes according to Lee H) and then spending 1/2 hour on phone to their help line, then having to set up passwords etc and ''allow" them to access loads of info.

Got to the stage where I had to allow access to location, I said I didn't want to, but he said that if I didn't, it wouldn't be able to tell me the weather.

I replied that if I wanted to know the weather I would look our of the window!

Eventually we had to give so much information that almost came to gving our bank details and password.

And if you are not extremely careful, you get signed up for subscriptions to Amazon Prime and music.

I was given a screen Alexa at Christmas, and its been great for armchair chatting with my brother in Yorkshire - like we're sat on the sofa having a natter. Have only used it a few times for obscure radio stations, BUT when I asked for a certain tune to be played it couldn't do it, and like Stratto said, its easy to be signed up for Prime and Music.

I've discovered that you can say play golden oldies and you get a loop of songs which change now and again. And if you say play steeleye span, it plays one track and then music of a similar genre.

And you can get a free audio book (choice of 3) that changes every month.

we’ve got 2 Alexa show 8, not the 5 which is a little too small. One in the kitchen and one in the living room. I use them for reminders, calendar entries, shopping list, timers. The living room one switches on the tv and a lamp. Use them to listen to the radio, check premium bond wins each month.
I also use them to get inspiration for recipes. I can announce things from room to room. I have occasionally contacted a friend on them.
we love them. Forgot we frequently check the weather report on it. Alexa when is it going to stop raining?

Oooh didn’t know about the free audio book

Anyone know if this is worth getting?
This sounds a bit Lee-ish but we have 6 Alexa boxes of various descriptions as well as 5 Fireaticks and three kindle fire tablets 🥴. I wouldn’t be without any of them.
We’ve two of the Show 5 ones in the bedroom - one on each side of the bed that we use as alarm clocks (we only had one in there originally but we upgraded the one downstairs and had a spare so we plonked it up there...) an 8 inch one in the lounge, the kids have Spots (not sure if they make them any more) in their rooms and we’ve a Plus in the kitchen / diner which is just for music and has a higher quality audio.
We have them connected to numerous smart plugs and bulbs all over the house and have them set do all sorts - switch the lights on at sunset every night for example, switch electric blankets on in winter, that sort of thing, mostly set up via routines in the App. We can drop in to the kids rooms to speak to them if they’re upstairs, either from another box at home or from out and about via the app on our phones. When they’re not doing anything else the screen ones are set to roll a slideshow of all our photos so they act like digital photo frames. we use them for music a lot, whether radio or from Amazon music. Oh, and when I’m making tea and everyone’s all over the house I tell it to announce that the foods ready and it tannoys it over all the boxes in the house so everyone turns up!
I highly recommend them - can you tell?? 😀

I know nothing about the Fire, how does it differ from the iPad which I do have?
Don’t have any of the Alexa or similar things, get nagged enough by the mutts.

It’s similar in the fact that it’s a tablet computer with apps and access to the internet, it’s different in the fact that it runs on a different operating system - the iPad is iOS, the Fire tablet runs Fire OS, which is based on Android. It’s a bit like the difference between an iPhone and a Samsung. They do the same thing, just in a slightly different way. For me the iPad is slicker and easier to use, Fire tablets are a bit ‘clunkier’ but they do the job. We have iPads for general use - my hubby has a fire tablet he takes to work to watch tv on at lunchtime, and my son has one for when his iPad battery runs out so he’s not without one (he has learning difficulties and it’s his kind of comfort blanket!). Fire tablets are quite a lot cheaper.

This superb Amazon duo includes an Echo Show 5 with a 5.5" smart screen, speaker and camera, ready to help you manage your day, entertain at a glance and connect you to your friends and family, plus a TP-Link Smart Plug allowing you to remotely control your plugged-in devices. With virtual assistant Alexa that answers commands and questions, gives the latest traffic updates and more, this amazing set will help you create your smart home.

*A great saving: If you were to buy the Amazon Echo Show 5 and TP Link Smart Plug individually, directly from Amazon you’d pay £78.98. So for our Today's Special Value price of just £48.98, plus P&P, you’re saving £25.05.

Let the Show begin - the Echo Show 5 is made to fit your life. Featuring a 5.5" smart display, speaker and 1MP front-facing camera, it's ready to help you manage your day, entertain at a glance and connect to friends and family with video calling and messaging. You can call almost anyone hands-free including UK mobile and residential numbers (from UK only), other Echo devices and Skype. Designed with your privacy in mind, you can easily turn off the microphone and camera with the press of a button or simply cover your camera with the built-in cover. You can personalise your Echo Show too, by choosing the clock face that fits your style best or using your favourite photos on the Home screen. There's even an ambient sunrise lighting feature to get your day started the right way, plus you can easily follow step-by-step recipes, watch film trailers, update to-do lists and calendars and glance at weather and traffic on your way out.

Manage your smart home - use the simple interactive display, or your voice to turn on lights, adjust thermostats, view security cameras and lots more. You can run your whole home, just sitting in one room!

Remote access
- the Smart Plug from TP-Link allows you to remotely control your plugged-in devices and schedule lights and other electric items to switch on, when you're away from home. So you enjoy peace of mind and take care of home security wherever you are, with these clever Wi-Fi plugs.

Just ask Alexa
- a voice-controlled personal assistant, Alexa responds to your questions and commands when you say her name. Alexa can check your calendar, get news, weather, traffic or sports updates, and even create shopping lists, as well as order you a takeaway or an Uber, or you can ask her to look up a recipe and she will read it out for you to follow!

Set up with the app
- the free Alexa app will allow you to easily set up and manage your Amazon Echo Show 5. Use the app to connect services you already use such as Amazon Music, Spotify and Google Calendar, then set up your smart home devices or see which books are available to listen to from your Audible library. The app is also great when you're out and about, allowing you to control your timers and set custom tones for your alarms, and much more back at home.

No more shouting up the stairs
- grandpa in the attic? Dad in the study? Kids in the den? As long as there's an Echo Show in the room, you can ask Alexa to 'Drop In' and send them a voice memo to let them know "It’s teatime", or even to "Turn the music down!". Drop In is an optional feature that allows you to instantly connect hands-free with the Echo devices in your home, and it can also double as an intercom or baby monitor.

Turn up the sounds
- connect directly to speakers using a 3.5mm stereo cable, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and enjoy hands-free voice control for your music - just ask for your favourite artist or song or request a specific genre or mood. You can also search for music by lyrics, when a song or album was released, or let Alexa pick the music for you. Plus, with four far-field microphones, beam forming technology and noise cancellation, Echo hears you from any direction, even while music is playing.

Multi-Room Music
- want to play music on an Echo in another room? Now with Multi-Room Music, you can tell Alexa to play across all your Echo devices. Just tell Alexa to play jazz in the kitchen, top pop in the living room, or play the same song downstairs - available for Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and Tune In.

Alexa makes the call
- when you’re busy making dinner or putting the little ones to bed, Alexa can make and answer a call, and even send or receive text messages! This handy feature works for anyone who has a supported Echo device or the Alexa App on their mobile phone. What's more, on-the-go calls are also a breeze; use the Alexa app on your mobile to make a quick call or send a message to your family’s Echo back at home.

The choice is yours
- choose between the sleek Black option or go for White for a stylish neutral shade that will fit in with any home decor.
