I bought a similar kettle from Lidl some years ago, probably about £10.

But I hardly ever used the temperature dial as I usually wanted boiling water anyway. And I had to be careful not to change the dial accidentally and end up with cooler water than I wanted.

PS the dial was on the kettle itself, not the base.

My kettle’s still going strong after 13 years and, like strato, I prefer boiling water for a hot drink. I only fill it up with one cup’s worth of water at a time which saves energy. It was about £12 so I really don’t need a kettle in my life that counts nearly £70. 😳

For that price I wouid expect it to make a drink, bring it to me and then wash the cup up.

My current one is a £12 Tesco. Their most basic is less than this, but I like the blue light and wide-opening lid on mine - - - I heat my mug with boiling water before making tea in it, then pour it back into the kettle to bring back to the boil before adding the teabag.

We've got a temperature control kettle and I think we paid about £40 for it but that was some years ago, it's Bosch brand and still going strong. There's no need to pay £100 for one, or even £70 for that matter. It's the sort of thing you can pick up in the middle of Lidl for about £30 if you're lucky, but it's one of those things worth shopping around for, 'cause as usual QVC only offer the most expensive they can find, knock a few quid off and expect us to believe we're getting a bargain! When we bought ours it was not a common thing to have, they were a bit niche, but now it's caught on, they're everywhere and don't have to cost the earth!

Am I missing something? I don’t understand why anyone would need an amount of water at a certain temperature? Surely if you want a bit of hot but not boiling water quickly, you just put the kettle off before it boils (as I do for coffee usually - personal preference). Are there tasks for which one would need 500ml of water at 85 degrees, for example?

Now come on Andi, you know that's not the point. How would Q ever make a profit if they only sold things using basic common sense? Get real. 😂😂

Yes, I had a Bosch kettle with 'state of the art' (whatever that means) temperature control. It was only when I had it standing on the worktop that I realised I didn't need anything but boiling water ! As said above, why would anyone want less than boiling water ?

Now I will be intrigued to hear what the ambassadors say about why we NEED temperature control - it will add to my education.

I’ve never really seen the point of those plumbed in boiling water tap thingy - I could be wrong but they don’t look safe to me.

We had a fancy Bodum kettle which was the most dangerous appliance I’ve even had, Mr L went to Tesco to get a cheapy to tide us over, cost £12, a bit naff looking, but boils quickly and we keep saying that we will replace it when we redecorate the kitchen!

That's because it hasn't started yet, and the children in charge of the website don't know how to change the message to something meaningful.

Well I don’t think anyone would truly *need* water at a certain temperature and not too sure as to why you’d need a specified amount at said temp...

Having said that, I am heavily into my “posh” loose teas and certain of those are better at certain temperatures..

Black tea needs the water to be fully boiling 100c - but some more delicate teas, such as some green and white teas etc, are better at 80c or they go bitter/burnt as well other variations.

Plus they do say as above that boiling water isn’t good for coffee..

However you don’t really a specialist appliance for it and you can get much cheaper kettles with the feature - plus I dare say a lot of people wouldn’t care about the subtleties anyway!

Ps. Just looked at the kettle listing - wrong way round I know! - and they’re saying much what I did...

However it does sound rather over engineered and almost too many features! Guess they have to justify £75 price tag!

What I cannot believe at that price is it’s plastic!
I hate plastic kettles and wouldn’t buy one.
I’ve had in past and could taste plastic for weeks plus the smell when boiling.
I stick to stainless steel and v happy with my compact Russell Hobbs!

plastic is good for people who cant lift heavy kettles with water in ect for example mum perfers plastic as its so much ligher to lift than an ordinary kettle (there is many more reasons but im not going into that)

I didn’t say there weren’t any advantages to plastic kettles, just that I hate them?!
So I don’t need you to go into the many reasons anyway, thanks.

I have a chronic illness and not able lift a kettle easily which is why I’ve got a light, small 1 litre one with a special lift aid/pastor on it too...
