Beauty Advent Calenders on QVC

I have a friend who`se husband actually made a wooden Advent calendar and each date has a hand decorated wooden drawer. Every year he fills the drawers with small gifts, toiletries, makeup, hair decorations, chocolates, funny gifts, woolly socks, all kinds of things and then behind the final door which is bigger, he always puts her main gift.
Similar advent calendars can be bought, there`s all kinds of kits to make your own or there`s ready made ones and even including the price of the calendar I reckon you could make something really special for much less money than the branded calendars.
Here`s links to a couple of calendars. I particularly like the third one but there`s lots of different ones available and they`d make lovely personalised beauty gifts.

I used to do that kind of thing for my son when he was little. My god but was it a chore after the first couple of years!! I'd start looking for bits and bobs in January. It cost a fortune and I had to really think about which order to put the gifts so he didn't love one and then find the next two a bit of a let down. He loved it though and still talks about it when anyone mentions an advent calendar. It was made of card and after a fair few years it fell apart. Boy was I grateful lol.

£150? Eek!

I've found the Bare Minerals one. It looks quite pink and it's £70 so that's out of my budget for a gift for a friend. I might actually purchase the BM TSV instead for her.

The Countdown To Gorgeous advent calendar contains:

Deluxe Marvelous Moxie Lip-gloss in 5 different shades
Deluxe Pop of Passion Lip Oil Balm in 4 shades
Eyecolor in 5 shades
Blush in 2 shades
Radiance in 1 shade
Original Mineral Veil
Tinted Mineral Veil
Mini Lash Domination Volumizing Mascara
Mini Lash Domination Petite Precision Mascara
Deluxe Skin Longevity

I've gone for the mid priced Body Shop one. It's £60 but has a value of over £100 apparently. I actually think the Decleor one is better value for money but the person who I'm buying it for has never heard of Decleor so it would be pointless getting her that one.

I had the M&S one last year. Loved it but as I still have quite a few of the products to use I had better pass on the calendars this year though I am still tempted as there are different products. Last year I particularly liked the Rose perfume which I would never have thought of buying. The lipsticks were goid too.

I made my own (with a pack) table gifts last year used the M&S advent calander. Everyone loved it. Didn't do the crackers as I hate the mess!!! Just little boxes with VERY nice gifts. I'm a Christmas bunny but like to think a sensible one x

Oh that's so lovely of your friend's husband, bet she was tickled pink! Really personalised and thoughtful, and he's put all that work into making it, too.

£150 is a lot of money, granted, but there may be a way to get more bang for your buck. Are you near a Charlotte Tilbury counter? You could book in for an hour long makeover to have one of their artists create one of the signature looks for you. If you go with a lead artist it costs £55 and is redeemable against other purchases. That will then take the calendar down to another further £95, plus you'll have had a pamper.

You're making me think twice about the Look Fantastic one. It's received a lot of hype based on last year, but who knows?

I normally go to the Charlotte Tilbury counter in Bentalls in Kingston, but was chatting to the lady on the Nars counter in John Lewis at Bluewater last week and she said that Charlotte Tilbury and Tom Ford are coming to their store soon and they're all having a refit. Some of his prices are insane, £600 make up bag anyone? I didn't know that they created looks for you, when you have a makeover, I've been collecting the bits for The Sophisticate look. It's not what I'd have expected to suit me, but the High Society lipgloss is one of my favourite shades ever. Also didn't know that the money was redeemable against purchases, so thanks very much for that info! I can feel a booking coming on!

The Look Fantastic calendar should be really good, it's meant to be over £300 worth of stuff. When I read that I wondered whether that was why my beauty box had become a bit naff!

That's really sweet, and he obviously really appreciated it. My Mum was really good with doing things like that for my sister and I, too.

Looking this thread, definitely fancy a beauty one this year rather than the Yankee one I usually get.

Was hoping that blog might have an Elemis one on it, but no luck. Does anyone know if Elemis usually do an advent calendar? Thanks.

Ordered the Decelor one. Couldn't resist. Just hope I can wait to the 1st Dec to start opening. I had the M&S one last year. I must say it was really good value for what you got in. It was exciting getting a beauty treat each morning throughout December. Would love the Liberty one though.

Elemis have never done one. Their gift sets usually start hitting the shelves around now. But did think surprised they never have.

I think they had one last year to be bought on their own website, but not on QVC.

There was also one in 2014, you can see it in the link: http://lovelifeandstyle.co.uk/2014/...-liberty-selfridges-benefit-elemis-loccitane/

The earliest novelty beauty calender I remember was Ciate, however it wasn't strictly and advent one. Maybe this started the madness off, because I think (referring to the Benefit Advent Calender panic last year and year before,) everyone has jumped on the bandwagon and now are cashing in on its concept. (The LE muslin cloth effect)
If I were to buy one for Christmas 2016, it would be Jo Malone, because she has recently suffered tremendously with breast cancer, and it would be my way of giving her support

You won't be supporting Jo Malone the woman. These days, Jo Malone the fragrance company is owned by Estee Lauder - sold it in 1999 and left it in 2006 according to this 2015 article in the Daily Telegraph http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/retailandconsumer/11399477/Jo-Malone-survives-the-wilderness-years-to-come-back-fighting.html. The brand she founded subsequently is Jo Loves http://www.joloves.com/?gclid=CN2h6o6MnM8CFQ4z0wodv_UO3A

There's an interesting article about Jo Malone in today's Mail Online:

Just to add, though, that Estee Lauder does support cancer and founded The Breast Cancer Research Foundation... so buying the Jo Malone Advent Calendar would still be supporting breast cancer.

They also own Bobbi Brown and used to do a few special pieces for Breast Cancer. The money they donated from each special item was pitiful, you throw more in a charity box than they gave. Its only the specially marked items where any money goes to breast cancer not everything from any brand they own.

These BIG companies do these special ranges for cancer(Laura Mercier does for ovarian cancer not breast), could donate far more if they wanted. No they just count on people seeing the pink ribbon etc on the packaging and buying and its only pennies from each the rest goes back into the company. I remember talking to an SA for Bobbi Brown way back. She did say they never will tell you how much they raised that year for the charity compared to how much they made themselves from the sales of the products.

Jo Loves has a new fragrance out called Spiced Plum(nothing to do with charity), which a friend got samples of before its release. He said its gorgeous, compared to what the Jo Malone company release.
