Having A Whip Round….

My parents love/d antiques - not that they had a lot of spare cash - so my brother and I got taken to a LOT of antique shops and junk shops and Fayres growing up!

My grandparents were the same 😊

I actually loved it - especially places where I could afford something with my pocket money.
But the high-end places where we just had to look and dream too.

To keep us interested, they set us up to collect items - old tools for my brother, and for me: teaspoons! 😄

I’ve got quite a collection, because people used to buy them for me for birthdays and Christmas too.
Lots are silver but others are just unusual or quirky..
Used to be able to buy them quite affordably and I kept a log of what I paid and the hallmarks/details.

I was a fascinating child!! 😜

Not added to the collection for about 20+ years now but have a tiny selection of about 15 favourite ones on display on a vintage mirror with shelves.

The rest are in tins/cloth because not up to cleaning them but do keep on top of the displayed ones.

Rattail is a lovely classic design and I’ve got a set of my Grannie’s with her initials monogrammed on them - not sure if they were hers or just by chance?

Sorry Alexis, you’ll have to buy your own, I’m sure you can afford it!

As for your dishwasher breaking your glasses?! Well I wouldn’t/don’t put delicate or tall wine glasses in mine but I’ve no idea what you’re doing there!

I’m Dream Girl and I have some cut glass glasses but I never wash them either in a dishwasher or by hand, cause they never venture out the cupboard.
As for my teaspoons I do have stainless steel ones that get washed in the dishwasher but my silver ones don’t get washed at all cause they are stuck in the wooden box from when they were a wedding present, over 25 years ago.
Does it make me a bad person??? 😉🤭😂

Aha no just quite normal I’m sure!
But have you never used the spoons in the wooden box in 25 years?!
Oh what a shame but do realise they are a big pain to clean!

Eh no they are still all individually covered and we haven’t used our china dinner service either that’s still boxed up too. 🤭
Oh no!
Do you not like your dinner service?!
Could it not have a little Christmas outing?!

My folks got married early 70’s and their wedding cutlery - not silver just v good quality - still comes out for guests or high days and holidays and still looks amazing!

And their dinner service was Wedgwood Blue Pacific and used to come out only rarely...
But about ten years ago dad and I found someone selling a huge lot of it locally on eBay, so we bought it as a surprise for mum.

She now uses it a lot of the time (less worried about breaking it etc!) and it’s really back in fashion (teal edging with mottled beige centre).
I love it! :)
Is very similar to the Denby I collect - using my clubcard points in the sales!

I really liked BRONZE cutlery when it came into vogue a long time ago. I bought a few loose teaspoons from a very expensive shop (where I normally just window shopped), and then bought an expensive canteen in a velvet-lined wooden box (not from them).

Actually, I never used it, but just used to admire it !!! as it looked just like gold.

Eventually I sold it for more than I paid for it, but like many other items I've sold in phases of decluttering, I've since regretted it, especially as bronze cutlery no longer seems to be available.

All I've got now is one of the original teaspoons. :(

It’s not I don’t like it it’s just so chintz I guess I’m much more plain white large square plates. I‘m looking forward to putting out some new table linen, runner, fancy mats and coasters plus an arrangement to make for down the centre, I’ve just ordered. So the dinner service will remain boxed and the wooden canteen closed. 🥳🎉

You are in good company with the plain white, very classy looking. My daughter loves the white square crockery too. I like it, very minimal and nothing clashes with the food on the plate. Also like you say, you can add detail in table accessories, linens and floral arrangements.

However, I am a super mad chintz fan, there, I'm out and I'm proud! My everyday service is Villeroy & Boch in Petite Fleur pattern and my special occasion service is Noritake Fragrance pattern. The latter was a right place, right time opportunity. I really love it and it was dirt cheap. I am never usually in the RPRT and pick up tat on impulse, to my shame. We went to a carboot sale and a lady had a van full of it (and a ton of dodgy clothes & dvd's, hmmm), over 140 pieces and she said £50 the lot, she just didn't like it and it had been bequeathed to her. It is all perfect, nothing damaged and I couldn't take her arm off quick enough. I remember Paul groaning and muttering to himself as he was puting the back seats down and carting boxes and boxes of it away! We had an escort estate and it filled the entire back. I only use it on high days and holidays as it has a gold rim, so you can't microwave it and I wouldn't trust the dishwasher. My daughter hates it :) The Villeroy was a gift from Paul, china for 20th anniversary and we have used it now for 14 years, still going strong and bullet proof. Lucie hates that one too!

Yes well I do really like your Petite Fleur, especially the lidded items such as the tureens.
But how we are living presently they wouldn’t go, now when OH retires we intend moving.
Unsure if will go ultra modern or Victorian/Edwardian with a modern twist.
Either way could always have a formal dining room, roll out the wedding canteen and dinner service or just get all new items. 🤭😂
One thing I wouldn’t be having though to store anything in are glass fronted display shelves of any kind kitchen or free standing.
Plus definitely not back the large mahogany table, chairs and large unit.
Strange how tastes change. 🤦🏼‍♀️

I had to google both of your China services and I have to say I LOVE the Petite Fleur - so pretty!

And the Noritake Fragrance - and I thought I knew lot of Noritake patterns - I didn’t recognise that one. Also nice but I suspect it’s better in real life as can’t see the detail on screen.

I was given my Grandparents dinner service but as you say with a gold trim, it’s really impractical!

My weakness is tea “trios” (cup, saucer and cake plate) and tea sets.
They used to be so affordable on eBay and charity shops, but reached saturation point!
My favourites are a pink floral and basket weave one by Foley and some hand painted blue and white ones...

Wish my tastes were more minimalist! (They are in certain regards...!)

Trio's are so pretty on display, the Foley sounds very nice. I had a peek on the bay but I don't think I found yours. Do you know the pattern name? I would love to have a nosey, or post a piccy? I generally have to refrain from even looking on the bay or charity shops but I so love a good charity run, just going to a place and visiting them all, one man's trash etc... I wish I was more minimalist too but I am definitely a maximumist LOL Happy you like Petite Fleur, I don't think it matters what sort of house you have, old or new or middle. I live in a bog standard 3 bed semi that was built in 1918. Brick half way up and then the dreaded rendering to the top. Looks like a typical council house but it's solid, warm and best of all it's now all ours! I hope you find a happy space when you decide to move on. We will probably up sticks in a few years, just to be more rural. Mainly to have more animals, we have geese and chickens as pets now but I want to expand into ducks.

Back to china, hell I do ramble! The Noritake is subtle but I was drawn to it first by the pattern as I am a sucker for daisies and ditsy florals. I had no idea who the maker was until I turned a piece over. I think you should buy what you like, not what you think is worth money. No sense in buying stuff you don't like just for the sake of a name. Brambly Hedge by Doulton was an obsession years ago. I collected every figure and used to ask for them as gifts from Paul. But I still love my display cabinet busting at the seams with them!

I also have a penchant for handbags and I do like some luxury bags but would never buy an ugly (in my opinion) bag, just because of the brand. Even Chanel get it wrong sometimes! I like vintage bags from the 50's and 60's and have a few really classy, ladylike looking ones that look like they cost a lot more than £10 - £20, my max for a vintage bag, a la charity shops again :) You see women on endless waiting lists for Hermes and the luxury bags and they will buy any bag they are offered, at any ridiculous cost, just to have the brand on their arm, crazy. I don't buy fake bags on principle, it funds organised crime being my main objection but there are so many people who do and are quite okay with it. I feel sorry for the Chinese sweatshop workers churning out fakes in terrible factory environments. Oh well, nice chatting away but I need some shut eye. Until tomorrow, stay safe and well everybody xx
