I take Forceval, extra iron, calcium and Vitamins d combined and have B12 injections my nails have never ever been good until now and its taken me nearly 6 decades to have nails that are not as dry as chalk and as flaky as a wafer

How do you get Vit B injections Boffy? How much are they, or can the nhs do them? I'm sure I'm deficient & am waiting for blood tests ( FBC's, U's & E's, thyroid etc) but GP says I am not allowed to go until lockdown over Grrrrrrrrrr. My nails were fab, but have been poor for about 6 years now. Gp says I have Raynauds too but don't think you can test for it.

Hi SB missed your post. I get B12 shots because I have had bariatric surgery so will be deficient for life apparently.....to get shots under the NHS you have to have Pernicious Anaemia which would mean you have a really low level of B12 when tested. the UK is not great at helping people with low B12 tbh its not recognised as being low unless your reading well under 300 say 150..To give an example the Japanese say if you are 500 or less you have PA and will treat you with B12 shots for life. Japan has some of the lowest levels of Alziemers in the world. B12 it very cheap and really does help people with a myriad of symptoms and potential life threatening ailments. But in the UK its still not available widely. There are shocking instances of Pernicious anaemia left untreated it can lead to death and not a good one.
To get some idea ask for a blood test with your B12 reading and see where you are if you are a lot under 500 and a meat eater I would say your deficient but the NHS won't!

Any B12 supplement to be effective (if you don't have Pernicious Anaemia) should be Methylcolbalamin not the other B12 Cynocolbalamin is a lower grade. supplements wont help you if you have PA because your body will not allow you to absorb it through your stomach you have to have shots. PA means your body cannot manufacture Intrinsic Factor. Vegetarians are usually low in B12 as its found readily in meat and animal products

Very helpful, B, thanks.

I was aware that if you have PA nothing will help except shots. So are yours free? How often do you get them?
Yes, I am waiting for tests (FBC, U & E - whole shebang) as have some other symptoms & raynauds, but hosp. will not do until lockdown over.
You kept your surgery quiet! Did you have it because you were obese? Not wishing to appear rude & I know you won't be offended - I'm dead interested in medical stuff.
How much was the surgery, what was your experience & has it worked?

Sorry Boffy. Having a 'moment'.
I'm just very inquisitive about doctor stuff. My GP often huffily comments that I've been 'reading up', (but I refuse to be a google/wiki tosser - The NHS's new nightmare! A completely different story, nonetheless ) "No, I just know that stuff".I reply. (they don't believe me!)
The fact that I feel able to ask you such stuff is because of the (good) way (I feel) you present on the forum. Htms.
Really excited to hear all about this from a real person not on channel 5.

Because you don't produce intrinsic factor you cant make the B12. You cant use the B12 supplements! I have always been very obese. looking back at old photos at 5 I was huge. My highest weight 24 stone at least and a size 30/32 I am now a size 16 but still weigh 13.5 stone so not quite my goal weight. I am pleased with the surgery. it was free on the NHS and my surgeon is a Harley street specialist so I was really lucky to have him. I have a lot of health problems so the surgery was done because of that and its helped . I was lucky no pain ever had the sleeve and enjoy food but cant eat huge portions anymore. saves me a lot of money on shopping!

Oh the b12 shot are free I have them every 3 months I eat a lot of meat and fish so hoping that helps with the B12

Very honest!

Sz 16 & 13.5 stone doesn't sound too bad to me. Look at all you've lost.

Were you unable to loose weight without having surgery? Why not? Did you try to?
tia.
