Is this really the best we can do for goodness sake........old Paul screeching out "Hey Jude" at the end of the opening ceremony encouraging everyone to sing-a-long! :wonder:

He wouldn't have been my choice either, Busy, but there's worse. Engelbert Humperdinck anyone?? :sun:

Anyone who has at one time HAD a voice will know that there comes a time when their "instrument" is past it's best. It happened to the sublime Callas but she still had something worth listening to, unlike lovely Paul, who was only ever able to make a sound that made us scream. I you listen to live recordings without benefit of recording studio he is often a good semitone under the note, but we loved him, anyway. Tom Jones STILL has it because he always had it. He acquitted himself magnificently at the Jubilee concert, no effort, no strain and as good in his own genre as Alfie Beau and Renee Flemming in theirs.

Oh God..they never know when to pack up do they! I was never much of a Beatles fan anyway and Hey Jude has to be the most depressing song/melody - now Shirley Bassey, SHE can still sing!

I wasn't a great fan of the Beatles either BM and could never understand all the screaming girls.....just like today with One Direction! You should see them hanging around Harry's house in the village if they hear he's home, think they must travel from many of the surrounding places.

Back to the Olympics then.....let's come up with our own suggestions but I'm really liking Calvin's Englebert. His crooning (or attempt at it these days ) would let everyone have a quick nap before the real action begins!

Who is/are One Direction..??! OMG I'm OLD...!!

Enge...too busy dyeing his hair...Tom Jones..too much of a leathery-chops...Gracie Fields, Matt Monro, Harry Lauder, dead & gone...well, suppose I'LL have to do it then...!

But she's one of those who always COULD!!!!!

Hey Jude is one of my favourite songs ever but I cannot see how it's appropriate for a sporting event, whatever were Coe (can he get any further up his own arse!?) et al thinking?? Macca hasn't the best voice either and I agree with Springflower that Tom Jones would have been a brilliant choice.

They were runners-up to Matt Cardle in The X Factor in 2010!

I think we could have a good mixture of oldies along with some of their well-known hits. How about the speakers blasting out:-

"Please Release Me" every time the sprinters are in their starting blocks

"Stop, Stop, Stop" whenever there's a false start

"Three Steps to Heaven" when the winner steps on to the podium to receive their gold medal

I wasn't a big fan of The Beatles and never really rated Paul McCartney's voice but his performance at the Jubilee Concert was cringe worthy he was off key and straining for almost every note, I know singing in an outdoor event brings its own technical difficulties but it's really either time to retire gracefully or give up the live events! Having said that Elton John and Stevie Wonder's performances were nothing to write home about either and although I'm not a fan of Tom Jones I thought he did a fantastic job he was amazing.

The Stones doing "Start Me Up". Trite I know but an improvement on Macca, they're brilliant live and Keef will always be a god to me.
If only...... it could be Freddie Mercury but even if he weren't gone 20 long years I am certain unlike the others he wouldn't perform at the age he'd be. He was too professional and always strived for perfection, putting it ahead of his huge ego which paradoxically makes him far more humble than the Macca, Cliff etc usual suspects.

Ooh Freddie Mercury, yes please...if only......or even Brian May playing of one Queens iconic pieces.

Being a tad controversial here but I love hearing Katherine Jenkins and she's well used to these outdoor big events. I had the pleasure of once meeting her during her very first tour when she was playing 'second fiddle' to a well known, at the time, operatic group. Being two welsh girls a long way from our original similar locale she was happy to have a little natter and allow me to take her piccy.

Not Paul McC or Cliff Richard......but I did used to like Spencer Davis group!

Watching / listening to Paul McCartney at the Jubilee concert made my toes curl, it was dreadful and the gurning and weighing up of the Queen he did afterwards whilst Prince Charles was doing his little speech was just as bad, yuck.

Surely they can find someone entertaining for the Olympic sing off.

The Olympics gives such a wonderful opportunity for us to show the world what a diverse wealth of musical talent we have in this country and how it crosses all ages and musical tastes. What about people such as Rod Stewart, Robbie Williams, Adele, Susan Boyle, Tom Jones, Russell Watson, Katie Melua, JLS, George Michael, Katherine Jenkins and Alfie Boe to name just a few? I appreciate that just because people are big stars in this country it doesn't automatically follow that the rest of the world will have ever heard of them and of course any artist I would have to be available and I assume be able to sing live? I understand that perhaps they feel that they need to go with someone safe but there are a lot of other options out there

I'm wondering if the Olympics isn't a cover for dealing with the world over-population by inciting mass suicide. Muse with "Survival" and the incredible melting face of Paul McC with "I Jude".
