I’ve just seen Simon Biagi describe this product -

by saying that it was “quite meritricious”

I had to look up that word and the definition I came across says

1.
apparently attractive but having no real value.
"meretricious souvenirs for the tourist trade"

Similar:
flashy,
pretentious,
gaudy,
tawdry,
trashy,
garish,,
chintzy
loud,
tinselly,
cheap,
tasteless,

artificial,
fake
bogus
sham
plastic

tacky

fakey

  • 2.
    ARCHAIC
relating to or characteristic of a prostitute

  • The truth will out, Simon. Hmmmm???🤣🤣

He should know better. His thought was probably that lamp had merit.

They're all at it. JF has just called a pair of pyjamas a "two piece collection".
She is trying to justify the price, maybe. The other day they were trying to persuade me that I could use the pyjama top to go out in, do my shopping etc. Sorry, for me, pyjamas are for sleeping in and not to be seen in public. Trying to justify high prices, by making them seem greater value. Mind you, being two different sizes, top and bottom I like Marks where I can buy just pyjama bottoms or tops.
