Thorntons massacre

The vomit taste is courtesy of Butyric acid. You also get it in parmesan cheese.

Hershey add it to stabilise the chocolate (I could put it in inverted commas as far away from our expectation of chocolate as it is).

In the USA, Hershey have the distribution rights for Cadbury's chocolate. It used to be possible for shops specialising in British stuff for homesick ex-pats to import Cadbury's chocolate from the UK... not any more - Hershey have really clamped down.

My favourite everyday chocolate is normally Green & Blacks, but I am trying to cut down/out the chocolate. This thread isn't helping....

Thanks for that explanation, at least its confirmed that I haven't been imagining the 'vomit' taste for all these years ! The US can put a man on the moon (40 odd years ago), yet still be light years away from producing decent chocolate and fashion !!!

I couldn't get why people would want to buy it. As I understand it, they had to do something to keep their chocolate consistent as it gets shipped across the USA - long distances and extremes of temperatures. I suppose if it's the one you're used to, you stop noticing the vomit thing... after all, once you get used to the pong of parmesan, you don't hesitate to put it on your pasta!

And yes - their fashion is strangely off the pace, in the main, certainly to British tastes.

I don't eat chocolate but Thorntons always used to be the "posh" kind. Not any more it would seem. I love Thorntons toffee but had to stop eating it as replacing my fillings was costing me a fortune! Any chocolate I receive as gifts goes into work where it disappears within 2 nanoseconds. No that wasn't an earthquake, it was the ladies in my office trampling all in their wake to get a free chocolate :mysmilie_5:

I agree with previous comments - used to love Thorntons years ago, but all of the chocolates seem the same now, sticky and heavy - I buy Lindt now, the chocolate is so much smoother, and all the different flavours are actually... different! lol.

JR's Ego, I treated us to a box of Milk Tray, on really good price reduction last week in our Asda even though we normally try to steer clear of eating chocolates (once you open the box, you can't stop!). Anyway, I ate one chocolate - couldn't eat any more. Where is the lovely, creamy (not over sweet) Cadbury's of old taste that I remember? This was like eating a piece from those cheap bars of cooking chocolate in the cake decorating aisle, it tasted far too sweet, and was slimy and greasy in texture. YUK! Reminded me of when my little niece made some cornflake cakes with cooking chocolate, and most of the choc ended up in a lump on top of a pile of cornflake! I'll never forget having to force one down, as she was so excited that she had "cooked" something, bless her! One thing, I'm saving money not buying anymore! They have definitely gone way, way downmarket with the recipe - next time I'll buy a bar of laxative, it will taste better...

Those Thornton sales pitches are the same as the 'walking into a bakery' effect, with the scent of hot bread. Watching those presenters stuff their little faces with gooey squares of heaven, does make most salivate, but the problem is... Thortons is NOT Thorntons anymore. In the 1980s Thorntons introduced a shop locally, where they sold various chocolates - e.g. an Alpini was at 10p each, picked up with silver tongs, and they let the customer try a sample. Ah the days of good customer relations. Now Thorntons fail because firstly gram for gram is hugely expensive and secondly, the recipe has changed (as have Cadbury - oh don't get me started on Cadbury Dairy Milk recipe) Thorntons and Lindt used to be a wonderful Easter treat for me, with Cadbury and the like a 'petrol station' 2nd. Now Aldi & Lidl chocolate surpasses most, at rock bottom prices.

I guess QVC use the old 'gift giving' excuse. If you need a Thorntons gift, run to Home Bargains. Huge box of Thorntons Classics - a fiver.

Oh, I think Hershey bars are vile! I had a chunk of one years ago, just to see what all the fuss was about....nearly gagged, tasted awful to me. I chucked the rest and assumed they were an acquired taste! Admittedly, haven't had one for years, but each time I pass them on the shelves in Asda I quickly look away..just the thought of it makes me gag..
Oh Americans have real trouble with sweeties at all. I remember going there years ago, and they didn't 'do' cream ! frozen yoghurt and I think there was frozen cream but pouring cream, no. Don't they have cows ????? and yes I found that Hershey chocolate leaves a (sorry about this) sort of vomit taste at the back of your throat .

I love the Charbonnay & Walker choccys, and their banana salted caramel truffles are to die for. Sooooooo expensive (John Lewis) but worth every mouthful.

I remember watching g the Osbournes fly on wall show and Ozzy went to a shop in America where they sold Cadbury bars :mysmilie_17: he bought about 200 quids worth lolol .....Hershey's balls are horrible!!! ....( I love maltesers too lol)
