Richard Jackson lawn magic

I haven't used that one but it seems a bit dear for a straight forward lawn food that doesn't include a weed & moss killer.

I think it's too expensive and you could get other products that do the job just a well for half the price. There are some tried and tested brands in the garden centres. I like Miracle-Gro which I water in using one of those bottle things that you attach to the end of your hose. Quick and easy which means I use it more often.

What RJ doesn't mention (well, I've not heard him) is that you should use different feeds for spring/summer and then for autumn to toughen it up for winter. Also no food will do it's best if you don't prepare your lawn before feeding it. Rake off any "thatch" of left-behind grass cuttings and loose moss and aerate the soil using a garden fork. Also don't water little and often in summer because the roots grow towards the surface where the water is and then get scorched in the sun. Give it a good soaking once a week if no rain.

I know he's flogging the stuff and not giving us in-depth gardening advice but I still feel that he is economical with the truth and relies on his viewers not knowing a great deal aout gardening so trust him.

That's all good advice from Eric's Mum.
There are dozens of lawn products in any decent garden centre, or even the supermarkets have some. If you don't want to have to go to the trouble of watering one on, or don't need to if you get lots of rain like we do here on the hills in the north west, you can get a powder or granule one that you just sprinkle on & wait for the rain to water in.
Clearing the thatch off & aerating the lawn can be really hard work if you have a big garden with lots of grass but you can hire things to help quite cheaply by the day from tool hire places, machines a bit like a lawnmower but that scarify & aerate the lawn while you just guide it like a mower.
To be honest, our garden is so big that I don't do it as often as I should, but I just let the geese in to help!

You'll get better advice watching Monty Don on Gardener's World, when it starts again on Friday nights in the spring, than from listening to Richard Jackson.

I bought the 5L size elsewhere before it became branded by Richard Jackson

I used this on my grass after some building work left it in a very poor state a couple of years ago.

The lawn did seem to respond quite well but but at the end of the day it's just a feed. It's not going to get rid of the weeds and moss

Good lawn care including raking out the moss twice a year (buy a cheap electric lawn rake) and not mowing too short will also be very effective if you are prepared to put in the effort.

Also don't expect anything to happen overnight. Three to four weeks during the growing season (either side of summer) is required to notice any real change. Plus you need to water the lawn as well. Might be a problem this year if there are widespread hosepipe bans!

Don't expect the "Weed and Feed" effect of an overnight miracle change (or black dead patches). Although to be balanced, since the formula of general purpose lawn fertiliser changed a few years back to remove one of the poisonous components the feeds at the garden centre are much much less effective. They have to add a dye element to get the green effect these days. The aggressive chemical approach seems only to be available to the lawn specialists now

So in along winded way I am saying that if you look after your lawn then this is probably a reasonable feed to use…. ….and that is why RJ is not lying when he says the product is used at major sports stadiums. They have armies of people to keep the grass at it's best before applying "his" Lawn magic
