Cala hasn't even been born yet. Is it just me that thinks its weird that the name of a baby is announced BEFORE it's born?

I thought in the seconds I caught she said the baby had been born, mind you, you'd have to put the telly in slo mo to understand what that woman says, honestly, the speed of light is slower.

Christ!! Catching the tail end of this thread I thought one of the presenters was leaving to have a baby!! Nearly dropped my iPhone lol.

I'm so sad that children are named before they are born. They may not suit the name or worse still ther may be complications with the birth. Get real a child is a gift. You open that gift when it is given. LA LA land is out of control. For gods sake you sell STUFF get real. Sorry if I've gone off on one but life is not all a dream.

Honey Bea is a little twee but I don't hate it. Cala Lilly is awful and hard to pronounce for a grown up let alone a child .

When Honey and Calla become captains of industry they can drop the cute half of their name and be known as Bea and Lilly. I've been pregnant 7 times and have two blessed children. It's a very personal thing but naming those I lost might have made it harder to deal with; for most of them I made a conscious effort to forget due dates as sad anniversaries do me no good. By number 5 I was ready to punch folk who said "It's for the best" and thought they were saying the right thing. Nope the best thing would have been a chubby little person after a few more months.

Back to Honey and Calla; it sets a precedent so any siblings may have similarly constructed names.

Yes just imagine if your big sister is called Oriental Lotus Flower and they decide to name you Jane - would you feel slighted or ****** relieved?

Or if your sister is called Apple are you glad they didn't go for Banana for you.

Imagine being the son or daughter who gets landed with "Phalaenopsis"..........two words (other than the obvious two) "deed poll"

I see in one of the Loose Women filled mags that some zleb has named her child Wynter. Do you reckon she will go for the full 4,seasons?

Ali K posted a picture of the new baby on her blog, born on the 20th I think. Beautiful baby, hope she brings her family lots of happiness.

My daughter went to school with a Tuesday (We got used to it very quickly and forgot about it iykwim) and she also knew a Totty (I never got used to that, but managed to resist the urge to ask "WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?")

Names are so personal, a part of one's identity, so I think the best policy is just to stay away from displaying too much of a reaction at introductions to unusual ones. Remember Julia's reaction when Marie-Francoise (Kipling) mentioned a friend calling her baby Luna?

She may have been born on 20/7 but the family had told everyone the name before she was born as this piece by Ali on her blog of 24/7 shows:

What do you think? Lucy and Simon arrived with Honey on Saturday morning just before the mattress did, and they were really pleased. We’re lucky enough to have two spare bedrooms so it’ll be fine to keep the cot made up as hopefully Honey will stay over regularly and there’s also James and little Cala Lily once she’s born.

Of course, I wish the family nothing but happiness too and it's their right to do whatever they want to, it just seems such a shame to me.

Pretty sure Cala Lily is not Ali's daughter's baby, either her son's or stepchildren's daughter.

Luna, sounds like a Harry Potter fan.

I have told this story before but hey. I worked in the passport office some years back, some staff used to go to the London office to work on exchange. In London its face to face counter only interviews for passport. Woman came in to get a passport for her new born daughter, the baby was called Treblinka. Yes, that is the Nazi death camp. She just thought it was exotic and Russian sounding. It had to be explained to her what it was. No idea if Treblinka is still walking round as an adult with the name? Hope not.

We had a small girl named Daisy Hooker, which caused some amusement. Poor little girl had a porn star name if ever there was one. A Wally Chicken who was a also a woman. Her birth certificated showed the name Wally!!! Not even a Wallace which would not have been so bad.

I hail from Lancashire and in these parts we all speak with rather a broad accent. One of my Aunts ( now dead ) was called Lettice prnounced Li- teece if said correctly but of course in these parts she`d be hailed with " Awreet Lettuce how ya doing ? ". Suffice to say she shortened it and then everybody called her Letty.
