Dale is sampling the Simple Simon pies. He is now on the vegetarian selection. He seems rather astonished that it's not just okay for him, a normal person, but it actually tastes like real food! Imagine that! Food that vegetarians eat actually tastes nice! Yes, Dale, it's perfectly edible for the rest of humanity. It tastes just like food. Why? Because it is food.
Mind you, I once saw a woman and her husband refuse to buy a cheese sandwich from M&S because it said "suitable for vegetarians" on the label …

I noticed Julia didn't take up his offer to come and try them lol

Those pies are very nice, actually. Obviously everyone can't like everything, but I can't quite get my head around veggie-friendly food somehow being different to other food, other than it being acceptable to vegetarians. It's still food. Some of it is great, some of it is rubbish … just like food that vegetarians don't choose to eat. I found Dale's attitude, that he would normally steer clear of anything vegetarian, a bit dated, to be honest. Will he really only feel happy eating something if it has meat, or presumably fish, in it? No cheese sarnies, no mac and cheese, no mushrooms on toast, beans on toast, egg on toast? No pasta primavera, no vegetable soup? It's not a big thing, each to their own, I just found it a bit odd.

I read somewhere that everyone should try and have at least 2 veggie days a week, very good for the digestive system apparently.

My biggest problem is that I hate veg unless it has been cooked in such a way to disguise the taste which more often than not defeats the purpose of healthy eating.

However of late I have managed to expand my variety of raw veg, lots of salad and tons of fruit. Very little red meat (even though I love it) and stacks if fish (even though I don't really like it).

Just love a good pizza, see I'm easily pleased!

I used to be a vegetarian for a few years, I gave up as it was negatively impacting my health. I still like lots of food intended for vegetarians though, like cheese and onion pasties instead of cornish ones and so on. Marks and Spencer have a nice veggie range that I used to buy lots from, I still get their vegetable kievs quite frequently. Obviously less nutritious than homemade stuff but still packed with numerous veggies and brown rice, lovely.

I'm pleased that supermarkets etc have 'vegetarian' ranges - I can easily see what I'm happy to eat without reading every ingredient. However, I can't help thinking that by having specialised ranges for veggies, they are missing out on a lot of people eating what is, of course, just food that doesn't have meat in it (and there is a lot of that) because they somehow equate 'suitable for vegetarians' to mean 'don't eat it if you're normal'?
As well as it being good for the body not to eat too much red meat, it's better for the environment too. To breed and graze cattle you need much more land, and a lot of nutritious grass. If we needed less meat, that land could be just used for the nutritious plants and we'd have a lot more food available at a lower cost.
