So, so agree, puffin. It really winds me up, and turns me off watching, so the marketing ploy fails entirely with me. I know that of course they are there to sell stuff and promoting an image of the "ideal lifestyle" is part of that, but it's just TOO much these days. Wouldn't be so bad if you only had 6-7 weeks or so of it, I could cope with that, but it starts in blurdy July, for heaven's sake!!!! For people who haven't got family or are going through a tough time on their own, it must be horrible. To all shopping channels : Just give us a ruddy break from it.

Don't they realise that there are a lot of people who don't have a family around them and don't want happy family pictures rammed down their throats. Its not just QVC, its everywhere these days. I wonder how many people actually have families like QVC portray. Not everybody likes Christmas and they should think of the people who don't and tone down all this happy clappy stuff. Humbug.

I agree .What gets me is all the promos are filmed in huge mansion like buildings stuffed full of huge trees,lights huge dining tables etc.I don't live in a house like that and its fantasy for most people .Buying their tat is not going to make my little house look like that !

That's what gets me. I do enjoy watching because it gives me ideas for gifts (which I then go and price compare elsewhere) :wink: And as I've probably mentioned before I do have Q on a lot in the background as the constant chatting is a bit of "company" if you can get what I mean.

My marriage broke up over the last year or so, my dear Dad passed away very suddenly & unexpectedly in June and my beautiful big dog died last week. Now I'm not looking for anyone's sympathy but I do find it brings a strange feeling to see all these "happy family" Christmas related things all the time. Yes Christmas is a time for family, of course it is, but as has been pointed out not all of us have that any more and for some those few weeks can be quite a tough time, never mind it being spun out in to a few months!

Oh and see that QVC Christmas music that is on at every break it is seriously creeping me out ........... it just reminds me of the music from The Omen! :devil: :sweat:

The secret is - have QVC on by all means, but as soon as the C word is mentioned, or that stupid musak starts, switch channels for half an hour, or even for 5 minutes if you're addicted. Think of all the money you'll be saving! (In my case, zilch, since I wouldn't be spending my money with them, but still).

I was in Ikea yesterday and overheard a young woman telling her partner that she was getting a salad spinner for someone's Christmas stocking.

With gifts like that I think you would be better off just forgetting about it.

I like Christmas as much as everyone else, but I already have grown so tired off all the shows and products shown in relation to it, and that music! Just saw Alison Cork on her "advert " saying everyone deserves to have a lovely home particularly at Christmas, no disrespect to her or her products but what a load of tripe as if a few bits from Q are going to transform my terraced house in Brum into Kensington Palace. I have made a promise to myself to have a far simpler and less expensive Christmas this year and not get so caught up in all the commercials hype. I have already agreed with a few friends that we won't buy presents for each other this year, we never know what to get each other, and end up spending a fortune,instead we are just going to send a nice card and go out for a meal in the New year, cheaper and far more enjoyable

So totally agree with you! This is exactly what my husband and have said. I have redundancy looming next year so don't need to be spending money on a load of ****, l need to save. It's so ridiculous and sad how we are caught up with the Christmas hype and believe we have to do things a certain way or buy a certain type of gift to be seen as a 'success'. I really think QVC have been harping on about it all earlier than ever this year, every weekend seems to be a sodding gift weekend! It's becoming boring and smacks of QVC being absolutely desperate for sales.

I like Martin Lewis's view that Christmas (and Birthday too) presents were a way of distributing gifts down to the next generation. Exchanging a dozen unwanted gifts for the same number of stuff that you don't need or want benefits no one except the retailers and for folk who are strapped for cash it's a burden, doing more harm than good. Now if my parents (were they still alive) or Mr Akimbo's folk were on a significantly lower income than we are9, then I'd extend that "redistribution of wealth" argument back to parents and grandparents. My late parents and grandparents always said "we don't need anything" so we'd bring the turkey or a ham or something else towards the dinner; my mum always liked M&S magnolia bath stuff, but she preferred to choose her own perfume and skincare and I'm the same. The ultimate nonsense is exchanging a gift card for another gift card where neither party knows what to get the other why not agree to just send a card? And if you don't know someone well enough to know what they'd like; don't buy anything!

theres too much expectation around christmas. my parents used to make me laugh your christmas present is a nice dinner. when your 12/13 thats a hard pill to swollow. but we got used to it. i just think with so many children it was a massive chore financially and physically. my dad was the sole breadwinner and mum stayed at home. we had no foreign holidays just a day at the seaside. we had good food and a lovely home and nice quality clothes but no fancies.

as been said the retailers and maufacturers benefit from xmas not us hum hum bug!

Do you remember Christmas 2009? I do. I'd decided to get away from family and friends who seemed to think that they just had to invite me for the festive season. Nothing worse than feeling that you're a charity case. I was off to Krakow for Christmas. It didn't start well as BA went on strike, but it was declared illegal so I was ready for the off. Then, in England, it snowed and snowed and snowed. Managed to get to Heathrow but nearly missed the flight as it was so busy. Finally got to Krakow (more snow in England than Poland) but had forgotten to take into account that Poland is a deeply religious country (I'm not) and everything shut on Christmas Eve and didn't open again until after I left to come home! The tour guide we had was completely off her head and before we had dinner on Christmas Eve she went round offering everyone a crisp from a bag of salt and vinegar saying "the body of Christ" as people dipped in. I expected a carton of Ribena to come out and for everyone to be offered "the blood of Christ." When I got home my boiler had packed up and couldn't be fixed until after the New Year. In the end I had to go and stay with my brother for ten days. Happy Christmas everyone!

Many people don't even feel comfortable saying they want to have a quiet Christmas with no hype.I know my friends and colleagues used to treat me as though I was a very sad person with no friends /family. But no.Mr T and I just decided enough was enough.In the end ,I only used to look forward to Christmas as 4 days away from a very stressful job.

I went looking for a birthday card today but couldn't find anything suitable as most of the display cases had been given over to Christmas cards. I am sorry but it is too early for all of them to be out. It's not even November. It really is getting earlier and earlier. I so hope l can find a nice birthday card though as it is a special birthday and l always pride myself on getting something a bit different. I am cross with myself for not being organised!

I agree with so many comments here but I felt bad for not sharing the enthusiasm for Christmas or rather this country's commercialisation of it.Why not a nice relaxing time without all the stress of shopping & spending money on presents that people don't want?Just means I hardly watch QVC & certainly don't buy.

I like Christmas, but for the time off work, the cosiness, good food etc. Gifts don't bother me and I only buy for my nieces and nephews. I would rather not receive any either. This year, having recently split from Mr MK, it will be about experiences rather than materials. It's nice to have an annual excuse to treat yourself to nice food and do things you wouldn't usually do. I'm looking forward to it.

My Dad's birthday is 3 days before Christmas and I always struggle to get a card for him. You have just reminded me to go and get one for him now before it is too late, and there are none!

I've got 7 birthdays in December and have to buy cards in early October or everything gets taken off for Xmas. This year added bonus of a new grandchild sometime in the middle of Dec.

Not even thought of Xmas yet lol.
