A go at a "constructive" thread

A great idea for a thread, thank you! I'd also like to thank Steve for coming back onto ST to respond to all the constructive, sensible comments that have been left on this thread. I don't know how much will come out of it (for example, I saw a presenter last night with bright red nail varnish), but I do hope that this time we'll see improvements all round and we can start nudging back to the Gems of old.
I must admit I've really missed it. I was so upset/disappointed at Graham's report on events that I let the items in my basket slide and I haven't bought anything or even watched the channels for about two months now. I really didn't feel like giving my money to a company that appeared to care not one iota about its long established, loyal customer base, apparently ignoring their opinions and even labelling them as a flock of sheep. For whatever reason, maybe now we are at least being listened to and I'm hopeful that we'll see some improvements soon.
I agree wholeheartedly with nearly all the constructive comments left on this thread, but for what it's worth, my two main gripes are still that awful heartbeat sound (I'll continue to refuse to watch as soon as I hear it) and a perceived lack of honesty from presenters and the channel trying to pull the wool over our eyes (for example when the format changed and we were constantly being told it was for OUR benefit). Please, honesty, honesty, honesty and remember that the customer is always right. The customer doesn't like being told that their feelings and opinions about a company are wrong, because that is simply what they are, personal feelings and opinions.

I haven't watched or bought anything from Rocks/Gems TV for at least a year now and thought that I would come on here to see how things 'are going'!!! That's a pure understatement! I immediately switched on my telly to see what all the furore is about.

Well I agree with quite a few of the comments made on here:

1. The 'heartbeat' - now that is annoying and unnecessary.
2. The ridiculous amount of makeup on the presenters hands - makes the knuckles look as though
they are bleeding.
3. The music volume - the presenters appear to be competing with it!
4. I thought that this is a reverse auction and that prices are reduced until the final piece is gone -
even if this means going down to £1. Now it appears that when the 'reserve price' is reached,
suddenly the game finishes and we move onto the next one. What is that all about!!!
5. Why are there brand new items in the 'Ultra Clearance'?

Don't think that I'll bother watching again! Much preferred Rocks TV when it was online with Barry and Carol - got loads of bargains then! The company appears to have grown far too quickly and Customer Service has taken a hammering as well as other key attentions to detail. Remember, Mr Bennett - the customer is ALWAYS king!

Very interesting thread and one in which all the oft-mentioned gripes are laid out very clearly for Steve Bennett to see.

I'll start with the good things about Gems, and that is that ladies with slender fingers are catered for in terms of ring sizes. Like Fluff, I have to spend money to resize rings if they are larger than a size 5, and the idea of having to do that puts me off purchasing something even if I really like it.
Secondly, Gems has a terrific asset in Alan Miller and should make his manner and style of presentation the standard all the presenters aspire to.

As to the things that still bother me and stop me from watching or purchasing these days, they are the same bugbears I've mentioned time and time again on other threads, but I'll recap here.

1) The continued stance that Gems is a genuine reverse price auction format. It isn't. In such a format the auctionee controls the price not the auctioneer. Everything is auctioned until it sells, even if it goes down to £1, and the auctioneer wouldn't be able to end the auction and move on in the way they do now. I think the point I want to make clear is that I'm not criticising Gems for having a price and stopping there - I simply want some transparency, and I don't feel we have that at the current time.

2) The hysterical screeching and shouty style of presentation so beloved by virtually everyone at Gems. It's unappealing and an immediate turn-off for a lot of people who would otherwise watch and then more than likely make a purchase. Add to that the exaggerations and misleading information given and you have a prime reason for former viewers switching off.

3) Meaningless price comparisons. We've been saying on here for ages that the gold price comparison with three shops on the high street is farcical and misleading, and now the ASA has agreed and told you to cease. All well and good. However, a couple of weeks ago I was checking the website to see the items still available, (I no longer watch the channels), and I was perturbed to see Victoria Norris holding up a piece of paper with a photo of a diamond ring and the words "available on the high street today" or something very similar, and another line about the gold weight being unknown, and then a price of something like £549 or £599. I didn't need to turn up the volume to realise that this was a way to get around the ruling on the price comparison malarkey. Frankly, I was disgusted. No way would a presenter do something like that off their own bat, it had to come from management, and it was an extremely cynical and dubious ploy to mislead the more gullible viewer. Meaningless nonsense. Where on the high street was this ring being sold? What was the gold weight and how many carats did it contain? Was it from a high end jeweller or a downmarket seller? So many factors that need to be taken into consideration when giving a realistic price comparison, and not one of them addressed. I'm thinking the ASA would have a field day with that one.

3) Ghastly musack and heartbeat and irrelevant shots of dancers onstage (I saw that on Gems Xtra ages ago. Yes, I realise that it's a kind of X factor vibe you're going for there, but it's meaningless in terms of selling jewellery and looks tacky and downmarket.

4) You have said that you agree with the points about grooming, particularly nails. Yet I've no doubt that if I tuned in now I would see someone (probably female...) with hideous tippexed acrylic monstrosities on view. You often talk about Gems being a family run business, yet virtually every female on the channel has what are referred to euphemistically as 'porno nails'. Not really the best representation of a family orientated concern. There have been numerous threads about this and how tacky it looks on camera, but it never seems to change.

5) Unacceptable wait for refunds. A little birdy on here tells me that in the latest Scoop magazine you encourage people to take their refunds in the form of a credit (fair enough), but you tell them that that will save them having to wait for their banks to credit their accounts. Erm, they're not waiting for the bank to deal with it, they're waiting for you to process the refund. If money can be taken from a customer within a matter of a couple of days, then surely it can be refunded just as quickly or near enough to make no real difference?

6) On a purely personal level I would be more willing to return to the fray if more elegant and dainty pieces were featured regularly. I absolutely abhor the huge knuckleduster type rings and find a lot of the Tookalon and Violent Vermicelli or whatever it's called pretty ghastly. Also, what's with the obsession (I presume it's still in place) with mystic quartz/topaz? Yuck.

7) Agree with the general consensus about melee diamonds and gold weight. I want to buy jewellery I can be fairly confident will last a reasonable time, not something fragile that cannot bear the weight of the gem it supports. The melee diamonds too often look like granulated grey sugar, and the rings would be much better without them. It is very disappointing to receive an item with poor quality diamonds, even if they are used simply to accent, they can very easily make a ring look unappealing.

8) I think it's important to reiterate that the reason so many people are disenchanted is that they thought you were different, a refreshing change to the hard sell, and ethical in your outlook and methodology. That seems to have changed quite drastically and it's disappointing to say the least. For instance, the use of gimmicks to sell, even though you say you don't like them; the endless clearances complete with presenters spouting nonsense like "I can't believe that this is in clearance, what a brilliant time to be watching" etc. All nonsense and misleading to newer customers who will very quickly move on once they realise they're not getting the ultra bargain they thought they were.
Why not just treat people as intelligent adults with the ability to make informed decisions when given the correct information, and not as children tuning into CBeebies?
If people care enough to tell you what's wrong, you should listen and act as and when appropriate. Yes, criticism hurts and is never pleasant, but dealing it with is the only way to ensure the future growth of a company trading in financially difficult times. I've often said that I thought you were short-termist in your outlook; that as long as new customers were buying everything would be alright, but that simply isn't so; a successful company needs loyal customers who come back time and again and feel happy about giving their money to that company.

Hi Iclaudipuss

Many thanks for your comments, they are all noted. Just a few points I would like to make.

1. Regarding whether we are an auction format or not. This one we will have to disagree on. In my mind many different auction formats have reserve prices and are still auctions. My point is that management do not set an individual targets for any auctions and it is up to the producer and presenter to decide what to close at. There only targets are an overall target for the day. They keep dropping the price at their discretion. Many items close below cost and many prices vary dramatically from auction to auction.

2. I am trying really hard to get the team to focus more on the jewellery and to remove the screeching, however, sometimes we all get a little excited.

3. This was totally the Presenters and producers call and I have spoken to both of them explaining how I totally disapproved of it.

4. Nails – everyone’s views on hear have been feedback to the presenters in training.

5) We are currently processing refunds on average in under 48 hours, however it does take some banks longer than others to process the refunds after we have instructed them. The comment in the Scoop was based on an idea from a customer and I think its very valid.

7) Regarding diamond Grading, I have taken advice from several Diamond experts and we believe we have a scale that is easy to understand and that is right for selling small accent diamonds or small diamonds in clusters, where multiples of the same pieces of jewellery have been made.

Hi Steve,
Thanks very much for your response.
I am very pleased to hear that the incident during the Victoria Norris presentation which I picked up on whilst browsing the site was not sanctioned by you, and I hope it won't be repeated. I appreciate your clarification on the matter.
I'm heartened to hear that feedback from people on here is getting back to the presenters and I hope they take it on board and realise that people who love jewellery want to watch it being presented, but presented well and without the histrionics. May I just mention one thing which I omitted from my earlier post? As far as I know an awful lot of the presenters are still referring to the auctions as "games", and there are also "Big Game Hours" listed in the TV section. I really wish that this would cease as it is not how an auction or sale should be described. Customers spending money really don't view it as playing a game, and I think that many new buyers coming to the channel would not feel very confident about purchasing from someone using gambling terminology to make a sale.

I'm glad to hear that the time for refunds has improved as that was a huge sticking point for a lot of formerly loyal Coloured Rocks customers.

As I said earlier, if people didn't care and didn't miss the good things they felt were a part of your company in the past, they wouldn't come on here and comment, they would simply move on to other channels and think no more about it. It's good, therefore, to hear that valid comments are being listened to and hopefully, as and when appropriate, addressed.

Unless it has since been repeated by someone else I'm happy to take "credit" for this, though at the time we were all a lot less jaded and wary. I stand by it though as someone who uses only a debit card. From time to time I have been unable to check out a basket because my money has been tied up in long awated refunds. At the time I had anticipated that the credit would be available almost immediately but if the returns process should ever return to the state it has been in previously, then this won't happen. xx

Is it possible to tighten up the stock control? Once again my order despatched today has an item missing. This rarely used to happen, now it's rare if it doesn't.

Thank you

As I was looking at a bracelet I quite liked the thought occurred to me, could we have bracelets in different lengths, like the ring sizes?

I understand gents jewellery costs more to make due to the larger sizes and what not but could we not see a little bit more gents jewellery? and with even more variety of stones and jewellery? More metal based bracelets! Necklaces! etc. It's such a shame us guys have to lump it with just loose Gem Collector stones to enjoy, whilst the ladies get to wear all sorts!

The online boutique is really frustrating at times. It seems most of the items don't categorise when you select different options. For example, you select 'gents' from the 'other style search' list and you only get a small selection and yet as soon as you select Mattom, more appear but I understand not all gents pieces are in that one range?

Photos! Well I must admit, they are getting better, compared to a few months ago but how is it some items still only have a small thumbnail image and as soon as you click the item, it says 'awaiting photo of this new Gems TV item'? I understand most of these are old stock from pre-18th June 2010 but how do you expect people to make a decision from a tiny photo?
