Resident beauty expert

I too have learnt so much from the beauty shows in 10 years watching QVC, they were the reason I tuned in initially. But like so many others have said, the last few years I just get annoyed with them. This is mainly I am afraid, down to Allison Young. She is getting away with far too much. She is getting far too familiar with the guests, making personal comments and insults. Joking, you may say, but some I firmly believe are down to jealousy. If you are presenting you have supposed to be enthusiastic about the products whether you like them or not. Most times she is completely wired and hyper, unless it is Liz Earle shows. It was so long before I even saw her present a show with Liz. Now you can see a mile off how lukewarm she is on air about the brand, thats with Liz. With Caroline she is downright insulting. Whether you love or detest the brand it is at the moment QVCs biggest skincare brand. As to chopping and changing advice. The wash off cleansers are wonderful if they are Elemis or the two french brands, but not C and P!! I use a mixture of brands, they all have something, but AY has held sway for too long and perhaps a bit of competition in the form of another beauty expert would make her mind her manners.

I remember when Alison Young started on QVC she use to ware what looked like a nurses uniform with
one eye on the studio clock , now she thinks she is the big cheese.
Sorry just felt like a moan , of coarse QVC has become a tits and nickers channel.:ninja:

I know I mercilessly rip the wee wee out of La Young, but I actually rather like her as a person in her own right rather than as a presenter - I find her sense of humour endearing, and when she actually takes the trouble to laugh or smile it's such a nice thing to see.

When I first started watching QVC about 7 years ago I did initially learn little snippets of things from her, but now she gives very little in the way of knowledge, it's just all hard sell, and the fact she just speaks over guests who are trying to impart their knowledge (and it's usually just to blether about which celeb is using said product or how many there are left in stock) is not very good either.

I had noticed this as well from the shows but thought it was just me, obviously not :giggle:

Why on earth would QVC allow AY to be insulting to guests?
It's in their interests to sell products no matter who the guest...especially well-liked ones like LEarle.
If people on here have noticed what AY is like, surely QVC have?

I like Alison she makes me smile with her total disregard for what is "proper". I do think sometimes she gets a little too much but I enjoy her shows and I enjoy her banter with some of the guests and off screen staff.

Actually fully trained beauty therapists have to learn a lot of anatomy and physiology pertaining to the skin which after all is the largest organ in the body.I remember my sister training years ago and borrowing my medical textbooks. She had to learn an awful lot of stuff relating to how the skin functions, how the cells replenish and what sort of diseases can affect the skin and how to deal with the consequences of these problems as well as learning about how certain things can cause the skin to react it was by no means an "easy" option so any therapist who is properly trained and qualified has a very in depth knowledge about not just the products they use but the theory behind skin care as well as a fairly high level of what I suppose you could call medical knowledge

I am surprised QVC employ such a gobby presenter as AY.
Just the sound of her "common as muck" accent puts me off her and she always talks over guests, it makes you wonder why QVC employ her.
I really wish QVC would have a mass cull and bring some new presenters into the fold.
There is so much dead would in QVC towers!!!

I got fed up with Anne Dawson this morning, wonder whether Antony did as well!

As a beauty therapist I feel I have to say that each therapist determines their own future knowledge and where it leads them professionally.
I am very much interested what goes on on the inside of the body as much as what happens on the outside that affects the skin. Four years ago I studied nutrition as this to me was also an important area regarding skin health as well as general health. Nutrition and skin care (if you choose it to) is an ongoing continuous and constant education process. In these subjects you study anatomy and physiology at varying levels depending on the qualification you are studying for and can be very in depth.

The brands (company) that are used in the salon should always provide training, refresher training in treatments as well as product updates and developments.

There are therapists out there who just study the basics that qualify them as a therapist and then don't take it any further, they never attend any further training courses to update their knowledge and skills and then there are others who are specialists in their subject because of continuous education in their specialised area(s), eg Aromatherapist, Manicurist, Facialist, Massage, Make up, Cosmetologist, Medical Esthetician etc etc.

Going back to AY, I agree with RedT with the vague 'speak' that she does, the constant nonsense bugs me! All we hear is 'literal cushioning, plumping, actual sheeeen, men in white coats in the lab, literal secret locked back door that even celebs cannot find, red carpet, private appointments, prestigious formulations and ingreedjunts for you' that we don't hear anything else that makes any sense! None of this is 'educational' for a consumer who needs information on what is suitable for him/her, . She really is a salesperson.

Also agree with everything delh has just said!!

She did mention a few times working for Clarins as Training manager I think. Clarins would have definately provided excellent training. Think she also worked at Grayshott Hall health spa and would have been trained by the brands that were used there, possibly Clarins and Decleor.

After qualifying there are many options/directions a therapist can take. Many jobs are sales driven, in some areas such as cruise ships the pay is very low and to increase that there are treatments and sales targets to meet with commission based on each target.
You need to have the gift of the gab and be very pushy!! Which is not me and why I am poor! I love the problem solving and treatment side of things.

I don't doubt her qualifications and imagine that the brands that QVC stock give her free products and information sheets to test 'for us' but as for working on clients regularly and continuous development that I'm unsure of. There are things she has come out with in the past that made me go 'what???!' when we would have both done the same basic training and she should know better....but then again it's said to get a sale

she is an embarrassment. strident, unfunny, insulting, fake.

i wish she would piss off and start her own brand. its a matter of time... why wait?

I really don't think she'd have a market for her own range, I imagine she's relatively unknown outside of QVC! (she's no Estee Lauder is she haha!).

And normal people who don't watch QVC like us would listen to her for about 12 seconds and go 'no thanks' and switch off.

Be interesting to hear her flog her own brand on QVC though, what would she say that would made it a choice over all the other presteeeeeeeeeeeeeejus brands she already flogs?!

Tx

Does anyone remember about 5+ years ago when Ali was absent for quite a while from QVC as she was ill - her absence was too long for the suits and Sarah Chapman was lined up to take the helm as another "QVC's beauty expert" well Sarah(before she launched her own range) was introduced as someone who would be a beauty expert and could help Ali with beauty hours - she only guested/was introduced in one hour and all of a sudden Ali was back on duty. That smelt to me of someone who was frightened to lose their job/position in the company(not surprisingly) - at the time i felt sorry for Ali as she still looked "puffy" from being ill, i always felt she had rushed back so as someone else wouldn't take over her role(even if it was meant to help her). Sarah has now gone on to launch her own very successful brand of lovely skincare(a wee bit pricey though) and Ali is still our actual prestiiiigise beauty expert(who loves dogs and horses and could eat for Britian whist slagging people off(even though its in jestx). I dont think it would be credible for Ali to formulate and launch her own range as well as continuing in her present QVC role?

I remember that! I can see why AY was so worried, apart from being a first class presenter, Sarah Chapman is still widely credited as being one of the leading London facialists.

Good point. Sarah seems quite regal and dignified in her approach. I can't see her yapping at 90 miles an hour and nearly disappearing up her own rear end! I have noticed during Sarah's product demos, AY reins it in a bit and goes into 'we are all prestige therapists' mode, whilst constantly mentioning royal clients and celebrity clients. Sarah tries to downplay this and is probably thinking "silly cow.

What I'd like to know is, who are all these presteeeeeejus clients who have been going to AY over the yurrs? I mean really? You can't get any information on her supposed private practice by Googling and QVC aren't forthcoming either (I think someone on here tried a while back...). SO is she so wondrous and fabulous that you need a word of mouth referral or something? Somehow I doubt it...I think 99% of what AY refers to re her training/clients/experience dates back QUITE some time...

I'd bet money it's her referring back to the olden days when she worked at various healthfarms/spa's, they were always a favourite retreat of foreign royalty and footballers.

I've watched AY off/on for the last 15yrs and she used to be the reason I tuned in at 17yrs old. I knew nothing about skincare and I felt like I was learning a lot. I genuinly believed in her experience and recommendations. I also respected that (as I understood) she didn't like or rate Liz Earle products so the fact that she didn't present them, or ever recommend them-for a long time, made me believe she had the integrity to refuse to 'fake it' to sell them. My sis & I love C&P so we really noticed that, am sure there were other brands/items too.
Now it's obvious, for whatever reason, she is 100% pure saleswoman-selling anything she's told to. I would prob do the same but it does mean I don't pay any attention to her now. I do still watch some of her stuff, and I like that she pushes her luck-but if I was in charge of the Q I think she'd be a nightmare to work with!!
